Role Description The Senior Java Software Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in Toronto, ON, responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable backend services that power HummingBird’s AI-driven talent platform.
This role involves developing and optimizing microservices and APIs, implementing features using Java and the Spring Framework, and ensuring high performance, reliability, and security across the platform.
The engineer will collaborate closely with product managers, data scientists, and front-end developers to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions and to integrate with external ATS/VMS and other third-party systems.
Day-to-day responsibilities include writing clean, testable code, conducting code reviews, troubleshooting production issues, and participating in architectural discussions and continuous improvement initiatives.
The role also requires mentoring team members, contributing to best practices, and supporting the evolution of the platform’s overall technical strategy.
Qualifications
Strong Software Development and Programming skills, with a focus on building scalable, maintainable backend systems.Hands-on experience with Java and the Spring Framework for enterprise-grade application development.Practical experience designing and implementing Microservices architectures and RESTful APIs.Proficiency in relational and/or NoSQL databases, performance optimization, and secure coding practices.Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure), containerization (Docker), and orchestration tools (Kubernetes) is beneficial.Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and monitoring tools to support reliable deployments.Strong problem-solving skills, ability to work in a collaborative, cross-functional environment, and effective communication skills.Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.Experience in HRTech, recruitment platforms, or data-driven SaaS products is a plus.
