What you will do As a Staff Software Engineer (Backend) you will: Set the technical direction for our backend engineering, shaping architecture, driving alignment, and raising the bar across the engineering organisation.Design, build and own APIs and services that serve as the core building blocks of our platform.Write clean, well-tested code, conduct code reviews, produce clear documentation and take the lead on solving the hardest technical challenges.Define and evolve backend engineering standards, patterns and golden paths that teams across Mosh adopt and build on.Drive the decomposition of monolithic applications into well-bounded, domain-driven services.Design and implement workflow and orchestration systems that power complex, multi-step clinical and operational processes.Build and maintain CI/CD infrastructure that makes deployments and releases reliable and stress-free.Use a data-driven approach to decide when new infrastructure or services are warranted.Design and run experiments on new and emerging technologies, documenting findings and recommendations clearly.Contribute to automated regression, performance and resiliency testing to keep production stable and fast.Drive operational excellence by instrumenting observability, authoring runbooks and actively contributing to incident response and resolution.Proactively identify and champion improvements to our software engineering practices and standards.Mentor engineers across experience levels, modelling best practice and actively raising the bar across the team.Collaborate closely with frontend engineers, product and design to shape clean API contracts and deliver great end-to-end experiences.Help grow the engineering team through interviews and code reviews. What you will bring A healthy curiosity, strong autonomy and a deep sense of accountability for your work.A genuine drive to grow as an engineer and raise the standard of those around you.Demonstrated technical initiative and a penchant for clean code.8+ years of experience designing, building, deploying and scaling API-driven systems.Fluency in at least one modern backend language (e.g. Kotlin, Java, Go, TypeScript)Strong experience with relation databases like PostgreSQLStrong experience running production workloads on public cloud platforms, particularly AWSStrong experience with Linux, Docker and KubernetesHands on experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as TerraformHands on experience with observability tooling such as DatadogSolid working knowledge of frontend systems.Extensive knowledge of: Cloud architecture principles and patternsDistributed systems, fault tolerance and resiliency patternsAPI best practices, including contract-first design (e.g. OpenAPI/AsyncAPI), versioning strategies and backwards compatibilityEvent-driven architecture patterns, including messaging, streaming and eventual consistency (e.g. Kafka, SNS/SQS)Workflow and orchestration engines for modelling complex, long-running business processes (e.g. Temporal, AWS Step Functions, Conductor)Nice to have: Healthcare, fintech, or other regulated industry background. What’s on offer We support a mix of in-office, hybrid and remote working across Australia. With several positions available, we’re open to exceptional candidates nationwide; however, we’re looking to grow our Sydney-based engineering presence and will prioritise candidates who can regularly collaborate from our Surry Hills office.
