This isn't just about glueing APIs together; it’s about deep-diving into server-side concurrency, designing zero-downtime database schemas, and orchestrating machine learning inference pipelines with deterministic reliability. The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking engineer who is not only fluent in modern TypeScript/Node.js and React patterns, but actively excited about integrating applied AI workflows, optimising pipeline unit economics, and driving operational excellence. What you will do: API Design & Data Engineering: Architect versioned REST APIs (OpenAPI) secured via OAuth2/OIDC, while managing PostgreSQL schemas, complex query optimisation, indexing strategies, and zero-downtime data migrations.Operational Web Application Development: Build responsive, high-performance web front ends in React and TypeScript featuring component-driven design, efficient server-state caching, and clean review workflows over large datasets.Distributed Services & Pipeline Architecture: Design and build asynchronous, event-driven ingestion pipelines on GCP using Node.js/TypeScript (NestJS), handling backpressure, dead-letter replays, and exactly-once write idempotency under heavy load.Inference Orchestration & AI Integration: Orchestrate long-running machine learning inference jobs (LLMs, detection models) behind schema-first contracts, implementing confidence thresholding for human review and tracking cost-per-item telemetry.Observability & CI/CD Delivery: Implement end-to-end telemetry (OpenTelemetry, structured logs), build containerised infrastructure via Docker/IaC, and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines with staged release strategies.Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with Machine Learning Engineers on inference contracts, Mobile teams on device APIs, and Product Owners to translate complex operational needs into resilient software solutions. What you need: Educational Background & Experience: 5+ years shipping production back-end services with expert mastery of TypeScript and Node.js in structured frameworks, paired with strong, independent React/TypeScript front-end capabilities.Forward-Thinking Tech & AI Fluency: Strong experience or proven interest in integrating applied AI/LLM toolchains, handling model inference contracts, and instrumenting cost and accuracy telemetry into pipelines.Technical & System Proficiency: Deep knowledge of queue-backed distributed architectures (Pub/Sub), contract-first API engineering (OpenAPI), and advanced PostgreSQL performance tuning (indexing, EXPLAIN analysis, partitioning).Analytical & Critical Thinking: High technical acuity with the ability to analyse connection pooling, resource limits, and complex data structures to turn raw throughput into cost-optimised, highly reliable system designs.Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Direct, transparent communication skills with the emotional maturity required to debate technical choices constructively, write detailed architectural decision notes, and collaborate across global teams.Agility & Resilient Problem Solving: An agile mindset capable of balancing rapid 2-week iterations, diagnosing complex distributed failure modes, and holding the line on automated testing standards in a fast-paced environment.
