A premier international securities firm is looking for a Backend Engineer (Python / Java) to join their core engineering team in Hong Kong.
In this role, you will design and build high-reliability backend microservices powering critical customer onboarding journeys and post-trade operations.
You will own core transaction workflows, including online account opening, automated fund transfers, identity/permission controls, and middle-to-back office clearing and settlement systems.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain resilient backend microservices and RESTful/gRPC APIs using Python or Java.Build and enhance mission-critical financial business workflows, including:Digital Onboarding & Account Management: Online account opening pipelines, e-KYC integration, user authentication, RBAC permissions, and account lifecycle maintenance.Fund & Cash Management: Automated deposit/withdrawal processing, internal fund transfers, cash ledger management, and balance updates.Post-Trade & Operations: Middle and back-office services for trade clearing, settlement, transaction history enquiries, fee/charge calculations, and trade reconciliations.Implement automated data pipelines, scheduled jobs, and high-volume batch processing using modern workflow orchestrators (e.g., Prefect, Luigi, Airflow).Optimize SQL queries and data models across relational databases (PostgreSQL / MySQL) to guarantee transaction integrity, consistency, and low latency.Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Business Analysts, Frontend/Mobile engineers, and DevOps in an Agile delivery environment.
What You Bring
Experience: 5 to 10 years of production backend software development experience primarily using Python or Java.Domain Background: Hands-on experience developing backend services for securities brokerages, wealthtech, digital banks, or capital markets platforms.Financial Workflows: Practical familiarity with core brokerage modules, such as account opening/management, fund transfers, transaction ledgers, or trade clearing/settlement workflows.Architecture: Strong understanding of microservices design, RESTful APIs, gRPC protocols, and distributed system fundamentals (concurrency, idempotency, high availability).Data & Batch Systems: Solid relational database expertise (PostgreSQL/MySQL), ORM frameworks, and hands-on experience with scheduled/batch processing systems.Education: Bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
