Description

About Matters Hi! We're Matters, a Stockholm-based company with a global vision. We're currently in stealth mode, building the next generation of banking to make financial well-being and wealth accessible to everyone. Our experienced team of proven entrepreneurs and operators is backed by prominent Swedish angel investors. We're building a company for the long run, prioritizing high standards, low ego, and a strong sense of responsibility. We value individuals who care deeply about the customer, speak their minds, keep their word, and are driven to improve their work, not just complete it. We move quickly, trust our team members, and expect them to use that trust wisely. While we're serious about our mission, we also believe the journey of building it together should be genuinely enjoyable. About the role We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to take ownership of the core services that move and make sense of people's money — authentication, transaction sync, and open banking. You'll evolve the backend from what it is today into what a bank actually needs, and you'll help decide what that means. You'll be based in our Stockholm office. What you'll work on Build and maintain the backend services in TypeScript/Node.js, where reliability is the feature.Design and operate Postgres data models and queue-based sync workers that carry complex financial data.Integrate and maintain open-banking providers — Plaid, Tink and SaltEdge — along with other third-party APIs.Own bank connections and the data and sync pipelines behind them.Shape architecture and technical direction as we scale.Drive the migration from our legacy Django backend to a modern Node stack on Render. What we're looking for Strong backend experience. We run on Node.js, and we care that you know the runtime, not just the syntax — much less which languages you got there in.A solid grasp of relational databases and API design.Fintech, payments, or open-banking experience is a strong plus.Judgement about what to build and what to leave alone. We make this for the person whose money it is.AI is a default tool here, not an experiment. We expect you to work the same way, with whatever models or tools you're most comfortable with. Our hiring process We believe in a transparent and thorough hiring process to ensure a great fit for both you and Matters. Here's what you can expect: TA Interview: A conversation with our recruiter about your background, what you're looking for, and what we're building. Ask us anything. Team Manager and CEO Interview: Here we go deeper into the craft. How you design services and data models, how you reason about reliability, sync and third-party integrations, and the judgement behind what you choose not to build. You'll also meet our CEO to talk about where we're heading and what you'd want to own in getting there. We look forward to learning more about you and how you can contribute to our mission at Matters. If you're ready to build something truly impactful, we encourage you to apply!
