Join an R&D team developing advanced industrial automation systems for large-scale robotic manufacturing equipment. You will design electrical architectures, select components, develop PLC software, create documentation, test systems, and commission equipment. A hybrid work arrangement and comprehensive relocation support are available for candidates moving from abroad.
Highlights
Hands-on opportunity to design and build electrical and automation systems from the ground up. The role combines architecture, component selection, PLC software, documentation, testing, and commissioning while contributing to sustainable industrial robotics and automation projects.
Description
Location: Espoo, Finland
Work mode: Hybrid, with 1–2 days working from home
Reports to: Lead Mechatronics Engineer
Type: Permanent, full-time
Relocation support: full package if you’re outside of Finland.
At Hyperion Robotics, we are building advanced 3D concrete printing systems to make construction more sustainable, scalable, and intelligent.
Our Tech R&D team plays a critical role in turning that vision into reliable real-world systems — designing, building, commissioning, and supporting the automation behind our 3D printer systems in Finland, the UK, and future deployments across Europe.
We are now looking for a (Lead) Automation Engineer to join us in Espoo, Finland.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys designing and building electrical and automation systems from the ground up together with the team — from architecture, component selection, and electrical topology to PLC software, documentation, testing, and commissioning.
You will work in a collaborative team environment with daily stand-ups, regular technical discussions, and shared problem-solving across disciplines.
This role is also ideal for someone who is already strong in automation engineering and has the potential to grow into a future Team Lead role as the team expands.
You will not join as a people manager on day one, but you should be excited by the idea of gradually taking on more ownership, coaching others, and eventually leading a small team of 2-3 members after 8-10 months.
What It Means In Practice
Building and owning electrical and automation systems for Hyperion’s 3D concrete printing solutions in Finland and future European deploymentsCreating scalable and robust hardware and software architecture for industrial systems built from the ground upDesigning electrical topology, electrical schematics, and control system layouts for new and evolving machine systemsProgramming PLCs using IEC61131 languages, especially Structured Text and, where relevant, Function Block DiagramSupporting HMI development, safety-related automation functions, and reliable communication between automation devicesCreating and maintaining clear technical documentation, including electrical schematics, cabinet layouts, testing protocols, architecture documentation, and commissioning handover materialsSupporting wiring, testing, commissioning, upgrades, and troubleshooting together with the wider engineering teamLeading or supporting root cause analysis for automation-related issues and implementing practical corrective actionsParticipating actively in daily stand-ups and technical routines, giving clear updates on progress, blockers, risks, and next stepsHelping improve development, testing, documentation, and handover practices so systems are easier to maintain and scale over time
To Succeed In This Role, We Expect
You have a degree in Automation Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related fieldYou have solid professional experience in industrial automation, ideally in machinery, equipment, or R&D-heavy environmentsYou have hands-on experience designing electrical schematics, electrical topology, and practical control system layoutsYou have experience designing control systems using Beckhoff hardware and TwinCAT, with understanding that goes beyond low-level PLC programming and includes higher-level hardware and software architecture. You can create and maintain structured technical documentation for both electrical and automation scopeYou are comfortable with hands-on engineering work when needed, including testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and occasional wiring support as part of the teamYou communicate clearly in both verbal and written form, and can explain technical progress, blockers, risks, decisions, and documentation in a way that other engineers and stakeholders can follow. You have experience owning the technical scope of a system, subsystem, or project — for example as a lead engineer or technical owner — and can work independently after onboarding while creating structure and ensuring maintainability, safety, and long-term reliability. You have experience coaching less senior engineers.
