About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Software Engineer to join our Wikidata Platform team. In this remote-first position, you will be instrumental in scaling the Wikidata Query Service and related platform services that support a wide range of tools, communities, and research initiatives across Wikimedia projects. Your expertise will help ensure the stability, performance, and scalability of critical backend systems that serve millions of users worldwide. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on open knowledge ecosystems, contributing to the development of innovative solutions that enhance data accessibility and usability. Collaboration across diverse time zones is essential, and you will work closely with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and maintain high-scale backend architectures, improve CI/CD pipelines, and document system architectures to promote transparency and knowledge sharing. Qualifications Bachelor’s or higher degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.Extensive experience in backend development, preferably within large-scale distributed systems.Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or similar.Strong understanding of database systems, APIs, and query optimization techniques.Experience with cloud platforms and containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools to streamline deployment processes.Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a remote, collaborative environment.Strong communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively. Responsibilities Design, develop, and maintain high-scale backend systems that support the Wikidata Query Service and related platform services.Optimize query performance and ensure system stability to handle large volumes of data and user requests.Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements and deliver scalable solutions.Contribute to the development and enhancement of CI/CD pipelines to facilitate continuous integration and deployment.Document system architectures, APIs, and processes to promote transparency and knowledge sharing within the team.Participate in code reviews, testing, and troubleshooting to maintain high-quality standards.Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry best practices to continuously improve system performance and security.
