Turnitin operates with a remote-first culture and has team members across numerous countries. ## About the Role Turnitin is seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join the Grading and Feedback (GRaF) team. The role focuses on building and maintaining backend services that support grading and feedback functionality. You will design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance backend systems using AWS Lambda and related cloud technologies. The position plays an important role in developing and optimizing Turnitin's serverless architecture while collaborating closely with Product, QA, UX, Support, and engineering teams. ## Key Responsibilities * Architect and develop scalable backend services using AWS Lambda. * Design and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven systems. * Build reliable, maintainable, and high-performance serverless applications. * Optimize existing backend services for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency. * Integrate backend services with frontend applications and supporting systems. * Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions. * Participate in technical design and architecture discussions. * Conduct code reviews and promote high-quality development practices. * Mentor junior engineers and share technical knowledge with the team. * Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in production environments. * Improve application reliability, maintainability, and operational performance. * Document technical solutions, processes, and system designs. * Continuously develop technical skills and stay current with modern backend technologies. ## Required Qualifications * 5+ years of professional backend development experience. * Strong proficiency in at least one programming language suitable for AWS Lambda. * Strong preference for Java development experience. * Experience with AWS Lambda, API Gateway, and DynamoDB. * Solid understanding of serverless architecture and best practices. * Experience designing and developing microservices. * Understanding of event-driven architecture and distributed systems. * Experience with RESTful API development. * Proficiency with Git and modern version control practices. * Experience with CI/CD tools and development automation. * Strong problem-solving and debugging abilities. * Excellent attention to detail. * Strong communication and collaboration skills. ## Preferred Technical Skills * Java * Python * Node.js * AWS Lambda * Amazon API Gateway * Amazon DynamoDB * Serverless Architecture * Microservices * Event-Driven Architecture * REST APIs * Git * GitHub Actions * CI/CD * Cloud-Based Application Development ## Compensation The expected annual base salary range for this position is **$112,125 to $186,875**. The position is also eligible for a bonus. Actual compensation may vary based on work location, professional experience, technical skills, education, certifications, and other job-related factors.
