About the Role
IBM is seeking Software Developer Co-op students to join its engineering teams for the Spring 2027 semester.
This is a 16-week, full-time Co-op opportunity designed for actively enrolled undergraduate students who want to gain practical software development experience while contributing to real IBM projects.
As a Software Developer Co-op, you will work alongside experienced IBM developers to design, develop, test, and debug software supporting cloud, AI, and hybrid-platform solutions.
The role is suitable for students who are passionate about software development regardless of the programming language they initially learned.
You will have opportunities to work with modern development practices, cloud technologies, AI/ML, automation, APIs, and Agile methodologies.
Key Responsibilities
Support the design, development, testing, and debugging of software applications.Contribute to front-end, back-end, or full-stack development projects.Write and maintain high-quality, reliable code.Work with programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, C++, Go, Rust, Swift, Kotlin, or other relevant technologies.Help develop user interfaces using frameworks such as React.Contribute to back-end services and APIs.Work with REST APIs and modern software architectures.Use Git and other version-control and collaboration tools.Work with cloud and container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, and technical discussions.Collaborate with experienced engineers and cross-functional teams.Debug software issues and contribute to improving application quality.Explore emerging technologies in AI/ML, automation, cloud-native development, and software engineering.Learn and apply modern development practices throughout the Co-op.Required Qualifications
Must be actively enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program at an accredited university at the time of application.Must return to complete the degree after the Co-op.Must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week, for the entire 16-week Co-op period.Must be available from January 19 through May 7, 2027.Students cannot be enrolled in concurrent coursework during the Co-op term.Must be available to join IBM in a full-time position between December 2027 and August 2028 after completing the degree.Coursework or project experience in software development using at least one programming language.Familiarity with fundamental programming concepts, including data structures, algorithms, and debugging.Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.Strong communication and collaboration skills.Ability to learn quickly and work effectively within a team environment.Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Python, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, C++, Go, Rust, Swift, Kotlin, or similar languages.Exposure to front-end technologies such as React.Experience with back-end development or APIs.Familiarity with SQL or databases.Experience using Git or similar version-control platforms.Experience with REST APIs.Familiarity with cloud services such as IBM Cloud, AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, or containerized applications.Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines or automation tools.Personal, academic, or open-source software projects.Understanding of Agile software development practices.Interest in AI/ML, automation, cloud computing, or hybrid-cloud technologies.Education Requirements
Required: High School Diploma/GED
Preferred: Bachelor's Degree

Compensation & Benefits
The listed projected annual salary range for the position is:
Minimum: $75,600 per year
Maximum: $166,320 per year
Compensation may vary based on job-related skills, experience, location, employment classification, and applicable laws.
