Description
AMPORTS is a leading finished-vehicle and roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) terminal operator, handling vehicle processing, storage, and logistics across multiple U.S.
port facilities.
Our work spans terminal operations, vehicle processing, yard management, and the corporate functions that keep the network running.
As we bring AI into how our teams work, we are building solutions around the way the work actually gets done — pairing engineering talent with the people closest to the operation, from the yard to the back office.
Role Summary
The AI Solutions Engineer works shoulder-to-shoulder with AMPORTS teams to find the highest-value problems in their day-to-day work and then builds the AI solutions that solve them.
This is a hands-on build role.
You will sit with terminal operations, vehicle processing, yard management, finance, and administrative teams, learn their workflows in detail, and ship working solutions on Claude and Microsoft Copilot — agents and custom projects, prompt-driven workflows, document and data automations, and lightweight integrations into the systems they already use.
Success is measured in deployed solutions and the operational results they produce, not in sessions delivered.
You will embed with a function for weeks at a time, iterate in the open with the people who will use what you build, and hand off something durable — documented, supported, and in real use — before moving to the next problem.
The work is distributed and close to the operation: expect to build alongside terminal staff who are rarely at a desk as often as with corporate teams.
Key Responsibilities
Solution Discovery
Embed with operations, processing, finance, and administrative teams to observe how work actually gets done and identify where AI can remove effort, error, or delay.Qualify opportunities on value, feasibility, and data availability; write a short problem statement and success measure before building anything.Maintain a prioritized backlog of AI use cases drawn from real AMPORTS workflows, sequenced by impact and effort.Park or kill use cases that don't hold up to scrutiny — the discipline to say no is part of the job.
Build & Deploy
Build and ship solutions on Claude and Microsoft Copilot: custom agents and projects, prompt-driven workflows, document and email automation, data extraction and summarization, and reporting aids.Integrate with the systems teams already use such as Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Excel, and terminal/yard systems via available connectors, Power Platform, or scripting where appropriate.Prototype quickly, test with real users and real data, and iterate until the solution is faster and more reliable than the manual process it replaces.Instrument what you build so usage and outcomes are visible from day one, and fit deployment into the operational rhythm without disrupting throughput.
Embedded Partnership & Handoff
Work alongside end users through build and rollout by pairing, side-by-side testing, and hands-on coaching in the context of their own tasks.Document each solution so it can be run, supported, and extended without you; including what it does, what it doesn't, and where human judgment is still required.Develop site- and function-level power users who can maintain and extend solutions between engagements.
Measurement & Iteration
Define the before/after measure for each solution.
Time saved, error reduction, cycle time, cost avoided and report results to IT and business leadership.Monitor deployed solutions for drift, breakage, and declining use; fix, retire, or rebuild as needed.Feed patterns learned in the field into a reusable library of components, prompts, and templates.
Technical & Governance Partnership
Partner with IT, security, and data teams on access, data handling, licensing, and integration approach.Act as the voice of the operation back to platform and vendor teams, flagging gaps, limits, and feature needs.Build within AMPORTS' AI governance and responsible-use requirements, and escalate use cases that need review before deployment.
Required Qualifications
3+ years in a hands-on technical delivery role, software or data engineering, solutions/forward-deployed engineering, automation, analytics engineering, or applied AI.Demonstrated experience building and deploying working LLM solutions: agents, assistants, retrieval or document workflows, or prompt-engineered automations that real users adopted.Practical proficiency with Claude and/or Microsoft Copilot, and fluency in prompt and context design.Working knowledge of Python or a comparable scripting language, plus APIs, JSON, and the Microsoft 365 stack (SharePoint, Excel, Power Automate).Ability to elicit requirements directly from non-technical operators and translate a messy process into a scoped, buildable solution.Strong communication skills; comfortable explaining technical tradeoffs to a yard supervisor and an executive on the same day.Self-directed and pragmatic; able to run several embedded engagements across sites with minimal oversight, and willing to travel regularly to terminal locations.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in logistics, ports, manufacturing, supply chain, or another operations-heavy industry.Experience with agent frameworks, MCP or tool-use integrations, or retrieval-augmented generation.Power Platform, Azure, or data pipeline experience in an enterprise Microsoft environment.Prior forward-deployed, solutions-engineering, or consulting delivery experience with direct user contact.Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus, depending on site workforce.
What Success Looks Like
First 90 days: Workflows mapped across priority functions, a qualified use-case backlog in place, and two or three solutions built and in real use.6 months: A portfolio of deployed solutions with measured time or cost impact, a reusable component library, and power users maintaining what's shipped.12 months: AI-built solutions are embedded in how core AMPORTS workflows run, with a repeatable discovery-to-deployment model and demonstrated operational value across the network.
