The RoleWe are looking for a Backend Engineer to help build and operate the systems that power Coffee Meets Bagel. You will work on APIs, backend services, data flows, and infrastructure that support our consumer product. This role starts with backend engineering, but it is intentionally broader: CMB backend engineers also contribute to infrastructure and reliability work when needed and develop ownership beyond a single technical area. This is a strong opportunity for an engineer early in their career who wants to build solid backend fundamentals while growing product judgment and expanding into infrastructure, distributed systems, and other technical domains. What You'll DoDesign, build, test, and operate APIs and backend services that power CMB's consumer mobile product.Work across backend and infrastructure as needed, contributing to reliability, deployment, observability, scalability, and operational improvements.Partner with mobile, infrastructure, data, Product, and Design to deliver new product capabilities and improve existing experiences.Participate in product and technical discovery—understanding why we are solving a problem, asking good questions, and contributing ideas rather than only implementing predefined requirements.Develop sound engineering judgment around data modeling, API design, performance, reliability, maintainability, and development speed.Take ownership of the systems you change, including testing, documentation, monitoring, debugging, and production support.Use AI-assisted development across design, implementation, testing, debugging, review, and documentation while validating results with engineering judgment and appropriate testing. What We're Looking For2+ years of professional software engineering experience preferred. We are also open to new graduates with strong relevant internship experience and demonstrated backend engineering fundamentals.Strong programming fundamentals and proficiency in at least one programming language, with the ability and interest to learn unfamiliar technologies.Foundational understanding of APIs, databases, data modeling, distributed systems, testing, debugging, and production software.Strong ownership and attention to code quality, correctness, maintainability, and the customer experience your software supports.Curiosity about the product and business problems behind your work, with an interest in developing stronger product judgment and contributing to solution discovery.Interest in growing beyond a narrow specialization, particularly across backend, infrastructure, reliability, and broader systems work as your experience develops. Nice to HaveExposure to cloud infrastructure, deployment, observability, reliability engineering, CI/CD, or production on-call environments.Exposure to ML or applied AI through coursework, projects, internships, or work.Experience building or operating consumer, mobile, marketplace, or other user-facing products.Experience working in a startup, lean engineering organization, or other environment where engineers take broad ownership. Our Technology StackOur environment includes Python, Go, PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, vector databases, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, queues and streams, CI/CD, automated testing, and observability tooling. You do not need prior experience with every technology in our stack. Strong engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to learn quickly matter more.
