Role Description The Staff Backend Engineer is a full-time, remote role responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable backend services that power the Coffee Meets Bagel platform. Day-to-day work includes architecting and optimizing APIs, services, and data models, ensuring reliability, performance, and security across the system. The person in this role will collaborate closely with product, data, and frontend teams to deliver features end to end, improve matchmaking and personalization capabilities, and enhance user experience through robust backend solutions. Responsibilities also include leading technical initiatives, reviewing code, mentoring other engineers, and contributing to long-term architectural decisions that support growth and innovation. The role requires proactive ownership of production systems, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of infrastructure and tooling. Qualifications Strong skills in Back-End Web Development and Software Development, with experience building and maintaining production-quality services.Proficiency in Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and general Programming concepts, including design patterns, testing, and code quality practices.Experience collaborating with Front-End Development teams, designing clear APIs and integrating backend services with client applications.Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical projects, make architectural decisions, and mentor other engineers.Experience with modern backend stacks (e.g., microservices, REST/GraphQL APIs), relational and/or NoSQL databases, and cloud platforms (such as AWS, GCP, or Azure).Familiarity with observability tools (logging, metrics, tracing) and practices for reliability, scalability, and security.Comfort working in a remote, distributed environment with strong communication, documentation, and collaboration skills.Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience; experience in consumer apps, social or matchmaking products is a plus.
