Own and advance core web-based geospatial visualization libraries used to understand complex physical environments. You will design 2D and 3D rendering capabilities, improve architecture and performance, and collaborate with specialized engineering teams to turn visualization requirements into scalable features. Deep hands-on geospatial visualization experience is essential.

Highlights

Senior engineering role owning core geospatial visualization libraries, with substantial technical ownership over 2D and 3D rendering, architecture, scalability, and performance for complex map data.

Description

The Mapping Web team builds the geospatial visualization tools that enable Zoox engineers to understand and reason about the robot’s world. The team develops internal map visualization libraries that power rendering across a wide range of applications. We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own and advance these core libraries. This person will extend rendering capabilities, strengthen the underlying architecture, and create scalable foundations that other engineering teams can build upon. Deep, hands-on experience with map and geospatial visualization is required for this role. In This Role, You Will Own and extend our deck.gl-based map visualization library. Design and deliver new 2D and 3D rendering capabilities for geospatial data, road networks, lane geometry, and our proprietary road network structures. Partner with teams such as Cartography and Simulation to translate their visualization needs into scalable features. Improve rendering performance for large, complex map datasets. Elevate code quality, documentation, and test coverage while mentoring engineers on geospatial rendering and React/deck.gl patterns. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong expertise in React and modern TypeScript. Hands-on experience with deck.gl, Mapbox GL, MapLibre, or a comparable WebGL-based mapping or 3D visualization library. Strong knowledge of geospatial data concepts, including coordinate systems, tiling, and vector and raster rendering. Experience designing and maintaining libraries or platforms used by other engineering teams, with a strong focus on correctness, modularity, testability, and code quality. Bonus Qualifications Experience working with large-scale geospatial datasets in autonomous vehicle, mapping, or GIS environments. Familiarity with WebGL and GPU rendering performance optimization. Demonstrated success providing technical mentorship and collaborating across teams on shared infrastructure. $201,000 - $275,000 a year We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
