Frontend Software Engineer

Salary Range: £45,000-£62,000 About CarbonAI CarbonAI is a UK-based AI and data company working in carbon markets, environmental commodities and ESG. We turn fragmented sustainability data into a trusted intelligence layer that helps organisations make better carbon markets and ESG decisions. We are passionate about designing AI systems that positively impact society and help make progress on climate and sustainability goals. The role We're hiring a mid-level engineer to build the product surfaces our users rely on. You'll own meaningful frontend work in React/TypeScript from day one with generous scope to shape the design and functionality, having real impact on the product. You'll have a clear runway to grow into backend and data/AI work as you go. This is a "T-shaped" role: deep enough in the frontend to ship high-quality product quickly, curious enough to follow a feature down into the API, the data pipeline, or the LLM layer behind it. You'll fit well if you already know how things work end to end but are still early enough in your career that you want to broaden and you want to do it somewhere your work has a climate impact. This is a remote role but candidates should be able to make occasional trips into our office in London for Team-days. What you'll do Build and ship user-facing features in React and TypeScript: from data-dense dashboards and interactive visualisations to agentic AI harnesses and reporting interfaces.Turn complex carbon-market and ESG data into clear, usable product experiences, working closely with design and domain experts.Own features end to end: scoping, building, testing, shipping to production, and iterating on real user feedback.Increasingly reach into the backend: building and consuming APIs, wiring up data flows, and touching the AI/LLM services behind our search and analysis tools.Contribute to code quality, reviews and engineering standards as the team grows. What we're looking for (must-haves) Roughly 2–4 years of professional experience shipping software to production.Strong React and TypeScript skills: you write clean, well-typed, maintainable component code and understand modern frontend patterns.Solid product instincts and eye for design - you care about the user experience, not just the code.Genuine eagerness to work beyond the frontend. You don't need backend depth yet, but you should be visibly excited to build it.Comfort with ambiguity and a growth mindset. We're a scale-up, priorities move, and you'll be trusted with real ownership. Nice-to-have / your growth path (not required) Experience with AI engineering tools: Codex, Claude Code, Cursor etc.Exposure to a Python based backend.Experience with APIs, relational databases or cloud infrastructure AWS or Azure.Any experience with LLM/AI features, particularly a chat-based AI harness.An interest in climate, carbon markets, ESG or sustainability. You'll pick the domain up here, but caring about it helps. What growth looks like here You'll start frontend-heavy and, over your first year, take on progressively more backend and data/AI work as you're ready, with mentorship and code review to support it. The goal is that you grow from "strong frontend engineer" toward "full-stack engineer who can own a feature across the whole stack," in step with the company. Interview process We aim to keep the interview process as streamlined as possible. If your application passes the initial screening you will be invited to a 1 hour technical interview. Successful candidates will then be moved forward to a second phase which will have more of a focus on product and design.
