About The Team Payments Data Services The Payments Data Crew designs and delivers modern data products, APIs and platforms that power payment experiences across the bank. We provide trusted, high-quality payments data through scalable engineering solutions, enabling better customer outcomes, operational excellence and data-driven decision making. What You'll Do As a Staff Software Engineer, you will: Provide technical leadership across squads, setting engineering direction and raising technical standards.Design, build and evolve secure, scalable and resilient software platforms.Lead architecture and design decisions for complex distributed systems.Drive modernisation initiatives using cloud-native and event-driven architectures.Champion engineering excellence across software quality, testing, observability, security and operational excellence.Foster a strong DevSecOps culture by owning solutions end-to-end, from design and development through to deployment, production operations and continuous improvement.Mentor engineers and help grow technical capability across teams.Partner closely with Product, Architecture, Security and Operations to deliver meaningful customer outcomes.Drive adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices, reusable platform capabilities and modern software delivery techniques where appropriate. What We're Looking For We're looking for experienced software engineers who enjoy solving difficult technical problems and influencing engineering beyond their immediate team. You don't need experience across every technology we use. We're interested in engineers who bring deep expertise in several areas and are excited to learn the rest. Software Engineering Experience with several of the following: Node.js and TypeScript for backend developmentBuilding APIs, microservices and distributed applicationsDesigning scalable, high-performance backend systems Cloud & Platform Engineering Experience with cloud-native engineering and platform technologies such as: AWS (including services such as EKS, ECS, Lambda, Aurora PostgreSQL, S3 and CloudWatch)Kubernetes and containerised applicationsInfrastructure as Code using Terraform or CloudFormationCI/CD and modern software delivery practicesBuilding observable, resilient production systems Architecture & Distributed Systems Experience designing and operating modern software platforms including: Event-driven architecturesKafka or similar messaging platformsMicroservices and distributed systemsAPI-first designScalability, resilience and performance optimisation Technical Leadership You'll ideally bring experience in: Leading technical direction across multiple teams or initiativesArchitecture and solution designCoaching and mentoring engineersDriving engineering standards, quality and best practicesTaking ownership of software across its full lifecycle with a DevSecOps mindsetCollaborating effectively across engineering, product and architecture teams Experience That Will Help You Succeed While many of our engineers come from payments or financial services, we're equally interested in engineers from other large-scale, complex technology environments.
