Opportunity for ownership across the full software lifecycle, from understanding problems to designing and deploying solutions.
Description
Software Engineer
Location: Cambridge / London / Reading
Salary: Up to £75,000
I’m working with an early-stage start-up helping organisations solve complex operational problems through bespoke software and applied AI.
They work with customers across finance, healthcare, manufacturing and the public sector, helping them understand where technology can genuinely improve the way they operate and then building the solutions to make it happen.
They’re now looking for a Software Engineer who wants more ownership than a traditional engineering role.
You’ll work closely with customers to understand the problem, help shape the solution and then build it from initial concept through to production and deployment.
The role
You’ll be involved across the full lifecycle of a project, including:
Working directly with customers to understand their workflows, systems and technical challengesHelping identify where software and AI can genuinely improve how they operateDesigning solutions and deciding what should actually be builtBuilding products, tools and integrations end-to-endTaking projects from early prototype through to production and deploymentConnecting APIs, data sources, AI platforms and existing customer systemsSupporting users after launch and improving products based on how they’re actually being usedTaking ownership of customer projects as the team continues to growThis isn’t a role where requirements are handed to you and you simply work through tickets.
You’ll have real ownership over both what gets built and how it gets built.
What they’re looking for
Strong commercial software engineering experienceExperience building products or significant features from conception through to deploymentComfortable working across different parts of a product rather than being limited to one area of the stackExperience working directly with customers, users or non-technical stakeholdersStrong communication skills and the ability to understand complex business problemsComfortable working independently and taking ownership of ambiguous problemsAn interest in applied AI and modern engineering toolingComfortable working in an early-stage start-up where projects and technologies can vary between customers
Tech
The team is technology agnostic and cares more about strong engineering fundamentals and your ability to pick up new technologies than experience with one specific stack.
That said, technologies commonly used across customer projects include:
Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, React and SQL
You’ll also work with major cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure and GCP, alongside APIs, data integrations and modern AI tooling.
Experience with areas such as LLMs, RAG, agents, MCP or AI integrations is useful, but not essential if you’re a strong software engineer who can learn quickly.
Why join?
You’d be joining a growing start-up at an early stage, with the opportunity to take real ownership of customer projects and influence how the engineering and delivery function develops.
The projects vary significantly between customers, so you won’t spend years maintaining the same product or solving the same problem.
One project could involve financial services, another manufacturing or healthcare.
If you’re a Software Engineer who enjoys building products end-to-end, working closely with users and having ownership beyond just writing code, this could be a great fit.
