Principal Go Backend Developer | Utrecht, Netherlands On-site, 5 days per week (office-first environment) Balanz Energy is building software for one of the biggest challenges in the Dutch energy market. As renewable energy production continues to grow, the grid becomes increasingly difficult to balance. Balanz Energy helps renewable energy providers and solar field operators optimize their assets in real-time through forecasting, automated trading logic, and asset-level optimization. The role You will work on backend systems that process real-time market data, weather forecasting data, asset information, and trading logic. The work combines distributed systems, event-driven architecture, automation, and large-scale data processing. As a Principal Go Backend Developer, you will take ownership of key backend systems and play a leading role in architectural and technical decisions. You will help shape how the engineering team builds, scales, and evolves its systems while remaining hands-on with implementation. You will work closely with engineering and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into pragmatic, reliable technical solutions. You will help shape engineering practices as the team grows. About Balanz Energy Balanz Energy recently went live in the Dutch market and is growing rapidly. The company combines software engineering, forecasting and trading logic to help renewable energy assets perform more efficiently and profitably. The engineering team is intentionally small and highly product-focused. By the end of the year, the engineering team will likely consist of around five engineers. AI-assisted coding is fully embedded into the engineering workflow. The team actively uses coding agents and AI tooling to move at a speed normally associated with much larger engineering organizations. What are we looking for We are looking for a principal-level engineer who enjoys ownership, scalable backend systems and solving complex technical problems with direct market impact. The ideal candidate is hands-on, pragmatic, and comfortable taking responsibility for architectural decisions and the technical direction of important backend systems. You are also comfortable operating in a small team where your technical decisions can have a significant impact on the product and engineering organization.
