Job Description Location: Boston, MA Hybrid: 3 days/week in office Chewy is looking for a Backend Software Engineer II to join our Pet Health engineering organization and help build the future of the Chewy and SmartPak experience. In this role, you will work alongside a team of engineers from both Chewy and SmartPak on a significant integration and modernization roadmap focused on integrating fulfillment and shipping capabilities, and developing new features across the combined platforms. About You You are a hands-on software engineer who enjoys solving complex backend problems and building scalable applications and services. You will primarily develop within Chewy's Java and AWS-based technology stack, while partnering with engineers working within SmartPak's .NET environment. What You'll Do Design, develop, test, and deploy scalable backend applications and services using Java and modern cloud technologiesBuild new capabilities supporting the integration of Chewy and SmartPak platformsDevelop services and APIs that connect e-commerce, catalog, fulfillment, and customer experiencesPartner with engineers across Chewy and SmartPak to understand existing systems and determine long-term integration approachesContribute to architectural and technical decisions as systems and capabilities are migrated or modernizedWrite high-quality, maintainable code and participate in code reviewsTroubleshoot complex technical issues across distributed systemsApply DevOps and software engineering best practices throughout the development lifecycleCollaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and business partners to deliver customer-facing capabilities What You'll Need Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent years of experience4+ years of experience developing backend applications using JavaExperience building scalable distributed systems and microservicesExperience designing and working with APIs and service-oriented architecturesHands-on experience with cloud-based applications, preferably AWSStrong understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software design principlesKnowledge of professional software engineering practices including code reviews, testing, source control, CI/CD, and production operationsAbility to work effectively across teams and navigate complex technical integrations Bonus Experience with Spring Boot or similar Java frameworksExperience with e-commerce, catalog, order management, or fulfillment systemsFamiliarity with .NET or C#Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging systems, or distributed systemsExperience with Kubernetes, Kafka, Terraform, or similar technologiesThe specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.
