Staff Software Engineer

MYL Instruments · Montréal MYL Instruments is building the intelligence layer for the operating room. We combine AI, computer vision, OR data, and hospital system integrations to help surgical teams improve workflows, capacity, training, and resource utilization. We are looking for an exceptionally strong, high-output full-stack engineer to join our core engineering team — someone who can build a feature end to end, from the interface a surgical team touches through the API and data model behind it down to the AWS infrastructure it runs on. That last part matters more here than at most companies. We are pursuing Québec TGV certification, HIPAA readiness, and SOC 2, and our cloud architecture is where those certifications are won or lost: every control we claim has to exist in code, be enforced at runtime, and produce evidence an auditor can verify. You do not need to arrive as a compliance expert, but you should want to own infrastructure and security as real engineering problems rather than someone else's paperwork. The person we want is an excellent software engineer without AI, and significantly more productive with it. You have the fundamentals to architect systems, write high-quality code, debug difficult problems, and recognize when generated code is wrong. At the same time, you use modern AI development tools aggressively to move faster. AI should amplify your engineering judgment, not replace it. What You'll Own You will work directly with our technical leadership and founders on critical parts of the platform, including: Designing and shipping production-grade healthcare software end to end — frontend, backend services, APIs, and data modelsBuilding and operating our AWS infrastructure: Terraform-managed environments, containerized services, event-driven pipelines, and secure media deliveryHelping drive our technical work toward Québec TGV certification, HIPAA readiness, and other healthcare security and privacy requirements — translating regulatory requirements into architecture, controls, and working softwareStrengthening authentication, authorization, audit logging, encryption, data governance, and privacy architecture, and making the resulting compliance evidence a byproduct of the system rather than a document-writing exerciseHardening the platform ahead of penetration testing and security reviews, and closing findings inside tight remediation windowsBuilding integrations with hospital systems and healthcare data environmentsWorking across cloud software, AI systems, computer vision, and edge infrastructureDebugging difficult problems across the stack, and improving existing architecture and code where necessaryUsing AI coding agents and LLM tools to accelerate development, testing, documentation, debugging, and refactoringTaking ambiguous problems and turning them into shipped solutions What We're Looking For 5+ years of professional software engineering experience preferredExcellent coding, debugging, architecture, and system-design skillsGenuine full-stack range — comfortable building user-facing interfaces and the backend, data layer, and infrastructure underneath themStrong backend, API, and database experienceHands-on AWS experience, and the willingness to own infrastructure rather than hand it off — infrastructure-as-code experience (Terraform or equivalent) is a significant plusStrong understanding of software and cloud security: access control, encryption, network isolation, secrets handling, loggingTrack record of shipping significant production softwareAbility to work independently across unfamiliar systemsAdvanced use of modern AI-assisted development workflows, and the ability to validate AI-generated code rather than blindly accepting itHigh ownership, urgency, and execution speedComfortable operating in an early-stage company where problems do not arrive perfectly defined Regulated Healthcare and Certification Experience Experience building software in healthcare or another regulated environment is strongly preferred. Relevant experience may include: HIPAA, SOC 2, or NIST frameworks — especially taking a platform through a certification or audit and owning the technical evidence for itMapping framework controls onto real cloud architecture, or compliance automation tooling such as Vanta or DrataPrivacy-by-design, role-based access controls, audit logging and traceability, sensitive-data architectureSecurity or regulatory audits and penetration test remediationEHR or healthcare integrationsExperience with Québec healthcare requirements or TGV certification is a major plus, but not required if you have strong experience working within comparable regulated environments.
