We enable #HumanFirstDIGITAL About the Role We are looking for a Backend Engineer – Python (API & Platform Engineering) to join our engineering team in Toronto, Ontario. This is a hands-on backend engineering role focused on building scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems for enterprise-grade financial platforms. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in Python, RESTful APIs, system design, platform engineering, databases, and cloud technologies, along with experience building distributed and highly scalable backend systems. This is an onsite role in Toronto, and an in-person interview in Toronto is mandatory. Position Summary The Backend Engineer – Python (API & Platform Engineering) will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend services and APIs. The role involves contributing to platform engineering, distributed system design, backend integrations, performance optimization, security, and observability. You will work closely with frontend, DevOps, product, and engineering teams to deliver reliable and scalable solutions supporting mission-critical financial platforms. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Python.Build and manage RESTful APIs and backend integrations using REST, JSON, and OpenAPI.Contribute to platform engineering initiatives focused on reliability, scalability, and maintainability.Participate in system design and architecture discussions for distributed and high-performance systems.Design and implement backend solutions with a focus on scalability, fault tolerance, performance, and security.Collaborate with frontend, DevOps, product, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.Work with both SQL and NoSQL databases to support high-volume and enterprise-grade applications.Optimize backend services for performance, security, reliability, and observability.Participate in code reviews and promote engineering best practices and coding standards.Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automation, and DevOps practices.Help build and maintain shared backend platforms and reusable engineering capabilities.Troubleshoot complex technical issues and contribute to continuous improvement of backend systems. Qualifications 5–10+ years of backend-focused software engineering experience.Strong hands-on experience with Python for backend development.Proven experience designing and developing RESTful APIs.Strong understanding of REST, JSON, and OpenAPI.Solid experience with system design, including scalability, fault tolerance, performance, and distributed systems.Experience with platform engineering or building shared backend platforms.Strong understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases.Experience working with at least one major cloud platform, such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Git, and DevOps practices.Strong communication, collaboration, analytical, and problem-solving skills.Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a Canadian university or college. Must Have Strong Python backend development experience.Hands-on experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs.Strong system design and distributed systems knowledge.Experience with platform engineering or shared backend services.Strong knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases.Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP.Familiarity with CI/CD, Git, and DevOps practices.Strong understanding of scalability, reliability, performance, and security.Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a Canadian university or college.Strong communication and problem-solving capabilities.Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, engineering-driven environment. Nice to Have Experience working in financial services or fintech environments.Strong understanding of microservices architecture.Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.Exposure to security, compliance, and high-availability systems.Experience working with mission-critical enterprise platforms.Experience designing systems that operate at large scale and high availability.
