Senior Backend Engineer Location: New York City, NY Work Arrangement: Onsite Employment Type: Full-Time Experience: 5+ Years About the Role We are looking for a strong Senior Backend Engineer to join our engineering team in New York City. You will play a key role in designing, building, and scaling reliable backend systems that power our products. This is a highly hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, working on distributed systems, and taking ownership of backend services from design through production. What You’ll Do Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable backend services and APIs.Own backend features and services from architecture and implementation through deployment and monitoring.Build high-performance systems capable of handling significant scale and traffic.Design and work with relational and NoSQL databases, data models, caching, queues, and distributed systems.Develop clean, maintainable, well-tested production code.Identify and resolve performance, reliability, scalability, and security issues.Collaborate closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and other technical teams.Participate in architecture and technical design discussions.Improve engineering practices, testing, observability, deployment, and operational reliability.Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and contribute to a strong engineering culture.Help troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues. Required Qualifications 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant backend development experience.Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages such as Python, Java, Go, Node.js, or C++.Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, APIs, databases, and distributed systems.Experience designing and building production-grade backend services.Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases.Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, monitoring, and observability.Experience building scalable RESTful and/or gRPC APIs.Strong understanding of software development, testing, debugging, and deployment practices.Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced onsite engineering environment in NYC. Preferred Qualifications Experience with high-scale distributed systems.Experience with event-driven architectures, message queues, or streaming systems.Experience with Kafka, Redis, PostgreSQL, or similar technologies.Experience with microservices architecture.Experience working in an early-stage or high-growth technology company.Experience building AI/ML infrastructure or backend systems is a plus.Open-source contributions or strong technical projects are a plus.
