Senior Java Engineer

About The Role Join our Database as a Service (DBaaS) team and help evolve a core platform used across Swiss Re. We provide secure, stable, and easy-to-use database services with a strong focus on automation and self-service, supporting both private and public cloud environments. We are looking for a hands-on Senior Java Engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering problems, improving existing systems, and contributing to the evolution of our platform. This role is primarily focused on software engineering and delivery. You will spend most of your time designing, building, reviewing, and improving code while contributing to technical decisions and modernization efforts across the platform. You will have the opportunity to work on both new capabilities and the gradual modernization of a large existing codebase, helping shape the future evolution of the platform. What You Will Do Engineering & Delivery Work with and improve a large existing Java codebaseDrive incremental refactoring and modernization of legacy componentsContribute to migration towards Spring Boot-based servicesDesign, develop, and maintain services forming the DBaaS platformDesign and implement new capabilities while modernizing existing componentsParticipate in code reviews and maintain high standards of code qualityTroubleshoot issues and contribute to the team's production support rotationCollaborate closely with database engineers and other teams Technical Ownership & Delivery Take ownership of selected features and initiatives from design through deliveryDrive pragmatic improvements in system design, reliability, and maintainabilityContribute to technical design discussions with a focus on practical and maintainable solutionsSupport end-to-end delivery — design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operationCollaborate with product owners and engineers to refine requirements and prioritiesApply agile practices to deliver incremental improvementsStay actively involved in implementation to keep decisions grounded in reality About You We are looking for a strong engineer who enjoys building and improving systems in a practical, hands-on way. Minimum Qualifications Strong experience with Java backend developmentExperience designing and building RESTful servicesExperience working with large, complex codebasesProven ability to perform incremental refactoring and modernizationSolid understanding of software engineering fundamentals and clean code practicesExperience with CI/CD, Git, and DockerStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsAbility to communicate clearly and collaborate across teamsProfessional proficiency in English Preferred Qualifications Experience with Spring Boot or modernizing legacy Java applicationsExperience with PostgreSQL and/or Oracle databasesFamiliarity with resiliency, retries, asynchronous processing, and related backend patternsExperience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred)Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and production troubleshootingExperience with messaging or event-driven architectures What We Are Looking For Someone comfortable improving existing systems step by stepAbility to balance technical quality with business needsA pragmatic mindset — choosing the right solution, not the most complex oneOwnership and accountability for delivered workA collaborative engineer who enjoys working closely with teammates and stakeholders For Slovakia the base salary range for this position is between EUR 3,800 and EUR 6,300 per month (for a full-time role).
