Highlights

Hands-on senior role developing secure embedded systems for critical infrastructure with strong architectural influence.

Description

Build the technology behind critical infrastructure At accesstel, we’re developing the next generation of secure embedded controllers for critical telecommunications and energy infrastructure. Our systems bring together power electronics, battery management, solar and generator control, digital and analogue I/O, advanced telemetry, web interfaces and secure over-the-air software updates. We’re looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to play a key role in shaping the architecture, security and reliability of these systems—from bootloader through to Linux services and system interfaces. This is a hands-on senior engineering role where you’ll have the opportunity to influence architecture, solve complex hardware/software challenges and see your work progress all the way from development through to field deployment. What you’ll do Design and evolve scalable, maintainable and secure embedded software architectures.Develop software across the embedded stack, from bootloaders through to embedded Linux services and device interfaces.Work closely with hardware engineers on board bring-up, hardware validation and hardware/software integration.Develop robust communications and device interfaces using technologies such as Modbus, CAN bus, SNMP, MQTT, TCP/IP and digital/analogue I/O.Implement secure boot, software integrity and robust OTA update mechanisms.Build systems designed for long-life, remote and autonomous deployment, with strong diagnostics, observability, fault tolerance and self-recovery.Contribute to software verification across functional, integration, system and environmental testing.Provide technical leadership, establish engineering standards and best practices, and make sound architectural decisions.Mentor other engineers and contribute to building a strong embedded engineering capability.Help improve development workflows, CI/CD, automated testing and release practices.Identify and manage technical debt, security risks, lifecycle risks and technology obsolescence. What you’ll bring We’re looking for someone with extensive experience in embedded software development and a strong engineering mindset. Essential experience includes: Extensive experience developing embedded Linux systems, including technologies such as Yocto and OpenEmbedded.Advanced proficiency in C/C++ and Python.Strong understanding of the Linux device model, device tree and peripheral interfaces including UART, SPI, I²C and GPIO.Experience with embedded communication protocols such as Modbus, CAN bus, SNMP, MQTT and TCP/IP.Experience with embedded bootloaders such as U-Boot and robust OTA update frameworks such as RAUC.Demonstrated ability to make and communicate architectural and technical trade-offs in complex embedded systems.Strong understanding of security, reliability and safety principles in embedded design.Experience developing high-uptime, self-recovering systems for remote or autonomous deployment.Strong debugging and diagnostic capability across both hardware and software.Experience with Git, CI/CD and collaborative engineering tools such as Jira and Confluence. It would also be advantageous if you have: Exposure to RTOS concepts and microcontroller architectures.Experience bringing up embedded hardware platforms. The ability to read schematics, datasheets and hardware documentation.Experience with IoT, telemetry or energy/industrial control systems.Knowledge of information security or industrial control system standards. An understanding of electrical or power engineering concepts relevant to energy systems. How you’ll make an impact This role goes beyond writing code. As a senior member of our Embedded Capability, you’ll help shape how we build reliable, secure and maintainable embedded products. You’ll work across hardware, embedded software, platform, quality and product teams, providing technical leadership while remaining hands-on with challenging engineering problems. We’re looking for someone who takes ownership, exercises sound engineering judgement and enjoys mentoring others. You’ll be joining a small, growing engineering team where pragmatism, collaboration and technical excellence matter. Why accesstel? accesstel is an Australian-based company that has operated across the Asia-Pacific region since 2001. We provide specialised asset management solutions and services for owners and operators of critical infrastructure. Our engineers work on systems that support critical telecommunications and energy infrastructure, giving you the opportunity to work on technology where reliability and security genuinely matter. You’ll have the opportunity to: Influence embedded software architecture and engineering practices.Solve complex hardware/software integration challenges.Work across the full embedded software stack.Develop technology for real-world critical infrastructure applications.See products through from development to field deployment.Mentor and influence other engineers as the embedded capability grows. Qualifications A tertiary qualification in Electronic Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline is preferred, or equivalent demonstrable experience. Ready to build embedded technology that keeps critical infrastructure running? We’d love to hear from experienced embedded software engineers who want to take technical ownership and make a real impact.
