Description

Employment type: Full-time, permanent Location: Predominantly remote, with regular in-person time Level: Junior or mid-level, depending on the right candidate Reports to: Head of Engineering About Format Format is rebuilding how digital design assets get made. Every existing tool makes you work on a bitmapped canvas, dragging and dropping shapes and text. Format doesn't. Every Format is a webpage: developers build a template using CSS and JSX, then configure a form builder that exposes specific fields - text, images, JSON data, even live data feeds - to end users. The result is a tool where anyone, regardless of design skill, can produce on-brand, error-free assets in seconds. We’ve launched in market, with sports, media, agencies and events clients (including Wisden, Major League Rugby, Sofar, Platform Media) and expanding more, pulling in real-time data from providers like CricViz and Oval Insights and content libraries from Getty, Air and so on to auto-populate graphics that get distributed on a schedule via Slack and email. Role Overview As a Developer joining Format, you'd be working at the intersection of web development and design tooling - building the underlying rendering engine that lets non-technical users manipulate live, code-driven templates without ever touching code themselves. This role sits at the intersection of front-end engineering and visual design. The day-to-day work is building images with JSX inside our internal tooling - writing components and using data (loops, conditionals, arrays, objects) to control what those components render. Strong JavaScript fundamentals matter more here than deep design experience, though an eye for visual design remains a genuine advantage. It's a small, fast-moving team, so you'll have real ownership over how the product evolves, not just a slice of it. Key Responsibilities Build Format templates using our internal JSX-based toolingTranslate client designs into high-quality, responsive JSX/CSS Format templates which include a wide range of inputsCollaborate with designers, marketing and the wider product team to build intuitive, engaging experiences within FormatEnsure the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs Secondary Responsibilities Contribute to the feature roadmap and ongoing development of the Format productTest, troubleshoot and debug issues related to design templates and the Format platformAdd to the team’s culture as we look to scale and grow Essential Qualifications Solid understanding of JSX/React and component-based thinkingConfident JavaScriptBasic CSS knowledge - enough to style and adjust layoutsExcellent problem-solving skills and attention to detailStrong communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical and design concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders Desirable Qualifications Stronger CSS knowledge — helpful but can be learned on the jobFamiliarity with tools such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Figma or Canva. Weprimarily read outputs from these tools rather than create them, so basic familiarity is a plus, not a requirement.
