Highlights

Build advanced backend systems, work on cloud infrastructure, and solve challenging distributed systems problems with modern technologies.

Description

About Nebul At Nebul, we’re building Europe’s sovereign AI cloud — trusted, secure, high-performance, and purpose-built as a European alternative to the American hyperscalers. Our NeoCloud platform runs on Nebul-owned infrastructure and best-of-breed open-source technologies, giving us control from the hardware layer through to the customer-facing cloud services. At the heart of that platform is Nexus, our orchestration and control layer connecting compute, GPU capacity, storage, networking, Kubernetes and datacenter services to the products our customers use. What You’ll Be Doing As a Golang Backend Software Engineer, you’ll build the backend services and distributed systems that power Nexus. This is first and foremost a software engineering role. Your focus will be on designing and developing production-grade backend services, APIs, controllers and asynchronous workflows in Go. Nexus acts as the programmable control plane between Nebul’s infrastructure and our customer-facing Cloud and AI services. Rather than engineers manually configuring infrastructure, Nexus exposes clean, versioned APIs that automate the provisioning and lifecycle management of services such as: Kubernetes clustersS3-compatible object storageBlock storageCompute and GPU capacityFirewalls and networking servicesOther cloud infrastructure capabilitiesYou’ll work on the software abstractions that turn complex infrastructure into reliable, scalable cloud products. Key Responsibilities Design and build scalable backend services in Go.Develop clean, versioned REST and/or gRPC APIs.Build controllers and orchestration services for infrastructure lifecycle management.Design asynchronous and event-driven workflows for long-running operations.Create software abstractions over compute, Kubernetes, networking, storage and security infrastructure.Build reliable state-management and reconciliation mechanisms.Integrate with APIs from Nebul’s Platform, Infrastructure and Datacenter teams.Implement authentication, authorisation, RBAC, tenant isolation and policy enforcement.Design services for resilience, scalability, observability and fault tolerance.Work with queues, events, databases and distributed state.Write automated tests and contribute to CI/CD pipelines.Evaluate open-source technologies where they can accelerate development.Participate in architectural decisions across Nexus.Take ownership of services from design through production. What Your Day Will Not Look Like This is not a traditional DevOps or infrastructure operations position. You will not spend most of your day: Manually provisioning infrastructure.Operating Kubernetes clusters through repetitive CLI work.Managing servers by hand.Working through support queues.Writing primarily Terraform, YAML or shell scripts.Building frontend applications.Infrastructure knowledge is important because of the domain you are building software for, but your primary job is building backend software in Go. What You Bring Strong professional software engineering experience with Go / Golang.Experience designing and building backend services and APIs.Strong understanding of software architecture and distributed systems.Experience with concurrency, asynchronous processing and event-driven systems.Experience working with databases, queues and service-to-service communication.Understanding of API design, versioning and backward compatibility.Experience building reliable, observable and production-grade software.Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud-native environments.Understanding of authentication, authorisation and RBAC.Strong engineering fundamentals around testing, maintainability and code quality. An ownership mindset and the ability to turn complex technical requirements into clean software abstractions. Bonus Points If You Have Experience building cloud control planes, orchestration platforms or internal developer platforms.Experience developing Kubernetes controllers, operators or Custom Resource Definitions.Knowledge of OpenStack or private cloud environments.Experience with infrastructure APIs for compute, networking and storage.Familiarity with S3-compatible storage, VAST Data or Ceph.Experience with networking APIs, firewalls or software-defined networking.Experience with workflow engines or reconciliation-based systems.Knowledge of policy engines such as OPA.Experience with multi-tenant SaaS or cloud platforms.Experience with NVIDIA GPU infrastructure or AI platforms. Eligibility & Application Information We welcome non-native Dutch speakers to apply. However, to be eligible, you must: Have a valid work permit for the Netherlands. We offer visa sponsorship, but you must already be living and working in the Netherlands.Reside in the Netherlands and be able to travel to our office in Leiden.Be fluent in English. Dutch is not required. Build the Backend of Europe’s Sovereign Cloud If you enjoy solving complex backend engineering problems, building distributed systems in Go and turning infrastructure into clean, programmable products, this is an opportunity to build a core part of Nebul’s technology from the ground up. Apply through Frank Poll and help us build Nexus — the software control plane behind Europe’s sovereign cloud and AI infrastructure.
