About The Role We are seeking an Engineer / Data Scientist (d/f/m) – AI & Operations Research to support future studies and research projects within the Operational Analysis and Studies department at Airbus Defence and Space. This role focuses on designing and conducting theory- and data-driven studies using advanced simulation, artificial intelligence, mathematical modeling, and data analytics techniques. You will work within an agile studies team to investigate emerging technologies and evaluate their application in operational environments. The position involves modeling complex systems of systems, developing AI and machine learning algorithms, analyzing large datasets, and generating data-driven recommendations that can influence early-stage design decisions and future defence capabilities. The role is based at the Airbus site in Immenstaad am Bodensee and offers the opportunity to collaborate with internal experts, research institutions, universities, and external customers on technically challenging projects. Responsibilities Design and conduct theory- and data-driven studies for simulation-supported operational and mission analysis in military environments.Develop and apply artificial intelligence methods, including machine learning, reinforcement learning, and multi-agent systems, to model tactical behaviors.Create mathematical and algorithmic models of complex systems and systems of systems.Develop, implement, and enhance algorithms within the company's proprietary simulation framework using C++ and Python.Perform Big Data Analytics, including statistical analysis, data processing, visualization, and presentation of large datasets to internal and external customers.Develop military scenarios and Concepts of Operations (CONOPS) for operational analysis and simulation studies.Take responsibility for assigned work packages, ensuring delivery according to agreed timelines, costs, and quality requirements.Implement software interfaces to integrate external hardware and software systems into simulation environments.Support the technical management of studies and projects, including preparation of work package descriptions and effort estimates.Support project leadership with customer presentations and technical discussions.Contribute to research collaborations with universities, Fraunhofer institutions, and other scientific partners.Identify opportunities to apply innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, and quantum computing to future studies and simulation projects. Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, or another quantitative technical discipline.Strong knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning, with experience using frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow preferred.Good to very good programming skills in Python and C++.Experience with object-oriented software development and complex mathematical or algorithmic modeling.Strong knowledge of theoretical and statistical data analysis, Data Analytics, Operations Research, and Power BI.Experience with simulation-supported operational analysis of military scenarios is preferred.Knowledge of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Measures of Effectiveness (MoEs) is advantageous.Familiarity with 3D game engine-based technical and tactical simulation environments is preferred.Interest in solving complex tactical scenarios using agent-based approaches and advanced simulation techniques.Willingness to travel regularly on national and international assignments.Fluent German and English language skills.Strong analytical thinking and enthusiasm for complex tactical simulations and theoretical systems analysis.
