Development Manager

Brief Description About the Role We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Development Manager to join our Technology team in Toowong. This leadership role reports directly to the Head of Development and is pivotal in driving technology excellence, people development, and delivery outcomes across our Growth Ops team. You will provide strategic leadership across technology, people, and resource allocation, managing a team of 10–12 software developers whilst ensuring the delivery of secure, scalable solutions that meet business needs. You'll be a natural mentor with a passion for nurturing high-performing teams, fostering a collaborative environment, and embedding a culture of continuous improvement. What You'll Be Doing As our Development Manager, you'll lead and inspire a high-performing development team whilst driving technical excellence and operational efficiency. Your key accountabilities will include: People Leadership: Provide direction, support, and mentorship to a team of 10–12 software developers. Develop individual performance plans, career pathways, and facilitate professional development opportunities aligned to team and business objectives. Technology Leadership: Own system architecture alongside the Head of Development and Architecture Group. Champion continuous improvement in development processes, streamline delivery throughput, and ensure all development work meets security standards, legislative requirements, and agreed technical architecture. Resource Coordination: Allocate personnel strategically based on business priorities, manage planned and contingency leave, develop succession plans for key skills, and identify and escalate resource constraints in a timely manner. Stakeholder Management: Build strong, trusted relationships with business and customer groups. Provide clear communication and reporting on all development work within your remit, acting as a bridge between technical teams and broader business objectives. Technical Impediment Resolution: Assist the team in finding solutions for technical and non-technical impediments whilst driving SDLC and efficiency improvements. What You'll Bring Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent industry experienceMinimum 5 years' management experience in software developmentProven people leadership managing teams of up to 15 developersStrong technical knowledge (relational databases, MySQL, Confluence, JIRA)Experience with SDLC, agile delivery, and project estimationExcellent problem-solving and analytical skillsStrong communication and stakeholder influenceCoaching experience and commitment to developing othersAlignment with A&G's values of high performance with high integritySelf-motivated, organised, and effective under pressureProactive approach to risk and compliance Highly Desirable 2+ years managing development teamsTertiary qualification in technology (BSc or Development focus)Experience with monitoring tools (Splunk, New Relic, or similar) Our Perks Benefits At Auto & General, we believe in supporting our people to thrive both professionally and personally.
