Strong focus on work-life balance with a flexible hybrid model (3 days onsite)Be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary agile environment alongside civil servants and industry experts Based in Swansea, South Wales - three days per week on-site Role Overview We are looking for an experienced Java Developer with strong expertise in Java and Spring Boot to design and build scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems. The ideal candidate should have experience working on large-scale digital platforms, including exposure to public sector or standards-driven environments such as GDS-aligned projects. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java (8/11/17+) and Spring BootBuild and manage RESTful APIs and microservices architecturesCollaborate with cross-functional teams including frontend, DevOps, and product stakeholdersWrite clean, maintainable, and testable code following best practicesEnsure application performance, scalability, and securityContribute to system design and architecture decisionsImplement CI/CD pipelines and participate in deployment processesConduct code reviews and mentor junior team members Required Skills & Qualifications Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring BootSolid understanding of microservices architectureExperience building and consuming REST APIsFamiliarity with Hibernate / JPAExperience with messaging systems like Kafka or RabbitMQExposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCPExperience with containerization tools like Docker and KubernetesStrong database knowledge (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, etc.)Understanding of secure coding practices and application performance tuningExperience with Git and Agile methodologies Preferred Qualifications Experience working in regulated or standards-driven environments (e.g., public sector digital services or GDS-aligned projects)Familiarity with modern DevOps practices and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, etc.)Relevant certifications in Java or cloud platforms Soft Skills Strong analytical and problem-solving abilitiesGood communication and collaboration skillsAbility to work independently and in team environmentsMentorship and leadership mindset Our interview process We keep things straightforward.
