Enterprise Cloud and Infrastructure Engineer

Steptoe, a Washington, DC-based Am Law 100 law firm, is seeking an Enterprise Cloud & Systems Engineer responsible for designing, building, operating, and continuously improving enterprise cloud and hybrid infrastructure with a primary focus on Microsoft Azure. This position plays a hands‑on engineering role in implementing cloud foundations, managing hybrid connectivity, automating infrastructure, and ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of core IT platforms. The Enterprise Cloud and Systems Engineer work deeply at the technical level deploying and configuring Azure resources, managing identity services, building Infrastructure as Code, automating operational processes, and maintaining enterprise storage platforms. This role collaborates closely with architecture, security, operations, and application teams to integrate on‑premises systems with Azure and to provide stable, well‑governed platform services that support firm‑wide applications and data. Essential Functions Design, deploy, and operate Azure infrastructure including virtual machines, networking, identity services, storage, and supporting platform services (IaaS and selected PaaS)Build and maintain Azure landing zones, subscription structures, resource organization, policies, and governance controlsImplement and manage hybrid infrastructure, including connectivity between on‑premises environments and Azure (identity synchronization, networking integration, and access controls)Administer and support Active Directory and Azure AD (Entra ID), including directory synchronization, authentication flows, conditional access, and role‑based access controlDesign and manage Azure networking components, including Virtual Networks (VNets), ExpressRoute or VPN Gateway connectivity, routing, and Network Security Groups (NSGs)Experience using Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform and/or Bicep to provision and manage Azure resources consistently across environmentsEngineer and operate enterprise Azure storage solutions, including Azure Files, Azure NetApp Files, and Azure Blob Storage, ensuring security. performance, availability, and appropriate data protectionBuild automation and CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and/or GitHub to support infrastructure deployment, updates, and operational workflowsImplement monitoring, logging, alerting, and security controls to ensure visibility, compliance, and operational stability across cloud platformsTroubleshoot and resolve complex cloud and hybrid infrastructure issues related to performance, connectivity, identity, or service availabilityParticipating in incident response, root cause analysis, and remediation activities to improve platform reliability and resilienceCreate and maintain technical documentation, standards, and operational runbooks to support IT Operations and ensure repeatable processesProvide advanced technical support and subject matter expertise for cloud and hybrid infrastructure services Non-Essential Functions Complete other duties as assigned Minimum Qualification Excellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to manage multiple tasks, priorities, and operational responsibilities effectivelyStrong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills3–5 years of hands‑on experience in cloud, platform, or infrastructure engineering rolesStrong experience with Microsoft Azure services, architecture, and operational best practicesExperience supporting hybrid cloud environments integrating on‑premises and cloud systemsStrong Windows Server and Active Directory administration experienceHands‑on experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and/or BicepStrong PowerShell scripting skills for automation and operational tasksExperience building or maintaining CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps or GitHubSolid understanding of networking fundamentals, including DNS, VPNs, routing, and connectivity conceptsFamiliarity with Azure networking services such as VNets, ExpressRoute or VPN Gateways, and Network Security Groups (NSGs) Education:Bachelor’s degree in a related field, equivalent technical certification, or comparable professional experience Certifications (Preferred)Microsoft Azure Administrator AssociateWindows Server Hybrid Administrator Or equivalent certifications supporting Azure, hybrid infrastructure, or infrastructure automation Success Factors Attention to detail: Designs and implements accurate, secure, and repeatable infrastructure solutions with minimal errorsCritical thinking and problem solving: Diagnoses and resolves complex technical issues across cloud and hybrid platformsCustomer service: Responsive and dependable technical partner to internal IT teams and stakeholdersInitiative and continuous improvement: Proactively automates manual processes and improves platform reliability and efficiencyTeamwork: Works effectively across architecture, security, operations, and engineering teams to deliver stable platform services Work Environment Non-smoking environmentAbility to maintain a flexible work scheduleAvailable to work 9:00 - 5:30 pm Monday through Friday.Hybrid work arrangements may be available for this position.Extra weekday and weekend hours may be required for special programs or eventsMust be available to work beyond regular hours when necessaryMust be able to work under tight deadlines and stressful situationsMust have ability to work independently The anticipated base salary range for this position is $117,000 - $127,000. The actual base salary offered will be dependent upon the applicant’s experience and qualifications, as well as other job-related factors, including but not limited to, relevant skills, education, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, geographic location.
