A software engineer is needed to maintain and extend a multi-system platform involving integrations, web applications, APIs, and operational support. The role combines coding with technical communication and troubleshooting.
Highlights
Own a broad technical role across software development, integrations, and customer-facing problem solving. Offers significant ownership across multiple systems and technologies.
Description
About the Role
This is a software engineering role first, wrapped around a product that lives and breathes wireless connectivity.
You'll own and extend a mature, multi-product codebase — a Java service bus, LAMP-stack web portals and API facades, a billing/proration engine, and a reporting layer — while also being the technical point of contact for the carriers we integrate with and the customers who run on the platform.
The right person writes the code, ships it across our products, diagnoses what breaks, and can then explain the outcome clearly to a non-technical customer.
There is significant personal ownership across the stack.
What You'll Do
Service Bus & Integrations (Java)
Build and maintain the Java service bus that drives carrier provisioning and cross-system integrations.Develop new carrier/customer integrations and enhancements.
Web Portals & API Facade (LAMP)
Develop and support the customer self-care web portal and API facade using PHP, Apache, and MySQL.Maintain export and data-handling paths that support the platform.
Billing & Provisioning Logic
Work in the billing engine where correctness is critical.Handle proration calculations, money handling, subscription management, and line-state transitions.Read existing logic carefully, reproduce reported issues, and fix subtle bugs involving in-place mutation, edge-case proration, and off-by-one cycle calculations.
Reporting (SQL + JasperReports)
Write and optimize complex SQL against a large proprietary schema covering device, usage, provisioning, account, and service-data tables.Build and optimize Jasper/iReport reports.Improve memory usage and performance through virtualizers, query refactoring, and streaming exports.
Operate the Codebase
Work with Perforce version control across a trunk and per-product substreams model covering approximately seven products.Support Docker-built and deployed services.Work with CI/CD pipelines feeding multiple servers.Use Unix/Linux for builds, scripting, troubleshooting, and operational support.
Carrier Operations
Manage the SIM lifecycle across carrier platforms such as Verizon/ThingSpace, AT&T, and others, including activations, deactivations, suspensions, moves, and subscription changes.Understand how integration status and billing state interact.Diagnose carrier-side problems, such as API outages producing unconfirmed error states.Reconcile platform records against carrier data dumps and rolling provisioning history.Trace a line's complete history through the system.General cellular/IoT and SIM-provisioning knowledge is required; deep GSMA, NB-IoT, or device-certification expertise is not necessary.
Customer Conversations
Own support tickets end to end.Gather requirements for onboarding and enhancements.Translate ambiguous technical states into clear, accurate answers for operations-level customers.Communicate when requested data or numbers would not be accurate and propose appropriate alternatives.Handle sensitive coordination involving data exports, migrations, and offboarding with sound judgment regarding scope and liability.
What We're Looking For
3–10+ years of software engineering experience.Strong experience working across multiple languages and within an existing production codebase.Strong Java, PHP/LAMP, and SQL skills.Experience with Apache, MySQL, Unix/Linux, Docker, and version control; Perforce is a plus.Ability to read, understand, and safely modify production billing and financial logic where precision is critical.Reporting experience with JasperReports, iReport, or similar technologies.Strong understanding of performance and memory optimization.General cellular/IoT and SIM-provisioning familiarity, or the ability to ramp up quickly.Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical issues to non-technical users.Self-starting and comfortable working in a small-team, remote environment where you may wear multiple hats.
