Opportunity to build scalable backend systems involving cloud services, connected devices, APIs, and real-time data solutions.

Description

Ready to make connectivity from space universally accessible, secure and actionable? Then you’ve come to the right place! E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. We are building a highly-advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) space system that will fundamentally change the design, economics, manufacturing and service delivery associated with traditional satellite and terrestrial IoT systems. We’re intentional, we’re unapologetically curious and we’re 100% committed to innovate space-based communications and deliver actionable intelligence that will expand global economies, protect space and our planet and enhance our overall quality of life. We are looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer to help build and maintain the backend platform powering our connected-device products. You will work across cloud services, APIs, data pipelines, fleet management, and real-time device communications. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who enjoys building production systems, solving practical problems, and working closely with embedded, hardware, frontend, and product teams What you will do: Backend Development Build, maintain, and improve Python/FastAPI backend services, REST APIs, and WebSocket endpoints. Develop features for device provisioning, fleet management, telemetry, events, device status, firmware management, and OTA updates. Design and maintain PostgreSQL schemas, migrations, indexes, queries, and data-retention strategies. Build and improve data-ingestion services using AWS IoT Core, MQTT, Lambda, RDS, Redis, and S3. Work with infrastructure-as-code and deployment tooling to maintain cloud infrastructure. Quality and Reliability Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests alongside feature development. Investigate and resolve production issues across APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure, and device integrations. Improve the reliability of telemetry ingestion through appropriate retries, idempotency, monitoring, and error handling. Participate in code reviews and contribute to clear, maintainable engineering practices. Help improve CI/CD, logging, metrics, and operational documentation. Collaboration Work closely with embedded, hardware, frontend, and product teams to deliver end-to-end features. Participate in technical design discussions and communicate implementation tradeoffs clearly. Share knowledge and help establish sensible backend patterns as the team and platform grow. What we are looking for: Required 5+ years of backend software development experience in production systems. Strong Python experience and hands-on experience with FastAPI, Django, Flask, or comparable backend frameworks. Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL, SQL, schema design, migrations, query optimization, and data lifecycle management. Experience with AWS services—or comparable cloud platforms—with hands-on AWS experience preferred, especially EC2, Lambda, S3, Cognito, and infrastructure-as-code. Experience with MQTT, WebSockets, message-driven architecture, or real-time data delivery. Experience designing and building REST APIs. Strong automated-testing skills, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing. Experience with Git workflows, CI/CD, code review, and production deployment practices. Clear communicator who can work effectively across engineering disciplines. Experience with Linux. Nice to Have Experience building cloud-connected IoT, device-management, telemetry, or other event-driven systems. Experience with AWS IoT Core, IoT Jobs, Device Shadows, or IoT fleet provisioning. Experience building firmware OTA, device telemetry, or fleet-management platforms. Experience with Redis, RDS Proxy, queues, stream processing, or event-driven architectures. Experience with AWS CDK, Terraform, or other infrastructure-as-code tools. Familiarity with embedded systems, wireless communications, or sensor-rich hardware. Experience with security-focused systems, audit logging, or operational compliance. Experience in aerospace, satellite, industrial IoT, or other mission-critical environments. Additional Requirements This is a fast-paced, high-impact environment - flexibility to occasionally work extended hours or weekends during critical periods is expected. $150,000 - $225,000 a year This is a full time, exempt position, based out of our Saratoga office. The total compensation packaged will be determined by various factors such as your relevant job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. We are redefining how satellites are designed, manufactured and used—so we’re looking for candidates with passion, deep knowledge and direct experience on LEO satellite component development, design and in-orbit activities. If that’s your experience – then we’ll be immediately wow-ed. E-Space is not currently able to provide employment sponsorship for candidates who do not hold work authorization for the location of this role. In your first 90 days, you will have mapped the current embedded software architecture, identified the highest-priority gaps, and shipped at least one meaningful feature end-to-end. Within six months, you will have established a team testing standard, introduced measurable improvements to firmware reliability, and built strong working relationships with hardware and systems engineering. How We Work On-site, collaborative environment. We build physical hardware - presence matters. Small teams with high autonomy. You own your area end-to-end. Fast iteration cycles. We prototype, test, and revise quickly. Direct feedback culture. We expect candor and respect in equal measure.
