Senior Software Developer

Our direct client has a full-time / permanent need for a Senior Software Developer. Hybrid (1-2 days/week, possibly less) Columbus, Ohio We are seeking a Senior Software Developer to join a small, experienced development team responsible for mission-critical, customer-facing enterprise applications. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on developer who enjoys solving complex problems, enhancing established applications, and having a meaningful impact on systems customers depend on every day. The ideal candidate will bring approximately 6–10 years of professional software development experience, with a strong foundation in Java and enterprise application development. Experience with GIS or ESRI technologies is a plus, but is not required. You will work across both backend business logic and front-end functionality, develop new features, resolve production issues, support application modernization efforts, and collaborate closely with Business Systems Analysts, QA, and other technical team members. Job Responsibilities Design, develop, enhance, and maintain customer-facing enterprise applications using Java and related technologiesDevelop new application features and functionality for future releasesTroubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve production defects and application issuesDevelop and maintain backend business logic, APIs, integrations, and database-driven functionalityContribute to front-end application development and enhancements as neededCollaborate with Business Systems Analysts and QA teams to clarify requirements and ensure alignment throughout the development lifecycleWork with technical leaders to design solutions, evaluate development approaches, and assess third-party tools and productsDevelop innovative solutions to complex technical and business problems, including proof-of-concept development when appropriateWork with relational databases, SQL, data scripts, and application dataParticipate in application upgrades, modernization initiatives, and ongoing technical improvementsParticipate in Agile/Scrum development processes while remaining flexible to project-based or waterfall approaches when appropriateParticipate in an on-call rotation supporting production applicationsPerform other duties as assignedQualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experienceApproximately 6–10 years of professional software development experienceStrong hands-on development experience with Java/JEEExperience with Spring and/or Spring BootExperience developing and consuming REST APIs and/or web servicesStrong experience working with relational databases and SQL; SQL Server experience is a plusExperience supporting, troubleshooting, and enhancing production enterprise applicationsWorking knowledge of JavaScript and modern web application developmentExperience working collaboratively with Business Analysts, QA, developers, and other technical stakeholdersStrong problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate complex application and production issuesExperience with source control, build, testing, and development tools such as Git, Maven, Postman, JUnit, or similar technologiesAbility to work effectively in a collaborative team environment while independently owning development assignmentsPreferred Qualifications Experience with Tomcat or similar Java application serversExperience with PythonExperience with Spring BootFront-end experience with Angular, React, Vue.js, or similar JavaScript frameworksExperience with application modernization, upgrades, or maintaining mature enterprise applicationsExperience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or other LLM-based coding toolsExperience working in environments with business-critical or customer-facing production systemsWhat Makes Someone Successful in This Role We're looking for a developer who is hands-on, technically versatile, and comfortable taking ownership of applications throughout their lifecycle. More important is a strong Java foundation, solid database skills, experience working with established enterprise applications, and the ability to troubleshoot challenging problems in production. This role is particularly well suited for someone who enjoys working on a small, experienced team where individual contributions are visible and meaningful, rather than being one developer among dozens on a large project.
