What to Expect The Cybersecurity Engineer role within McLaren Automotive, responsible for performing cybersecurity TARAs, defining technical specifications and contributing to McLaren Cyber Security Management System. This role combines technical expertise with a strong understanding of programme constraints, business priorities, and cross-functional collaboration. The primary purpose of this role is to develop and guide pragmatic cybersecurity solutions that are not only technically robust but also aligned with programme timing, cost targets, and strategic business objectives. Rather than defaulting to purely technical approaches, the role requires thoughtful evaluation of trade-offs and the ability to propose solutions that balance innovation, feasibility, and value. Working closely with functional groups and project teams, the Cybersecurity Engineer will address complex challenges, optimise secure architectures, and ensure McLaren’s high standards for safety, security, and performance are upheld—while maintaining agility and responsiveness to programme needs. What You'll Do Cybersecurity Design Create technical specifications for cybersecurity features, supporting function and system owners across Systems, Software & Controls in their implementation. Support TARA activity and delivery for each vehicle programme Cybersecurity Strategies Define plans that are technically robust yet practical, scalable, and aligned with business needs, balancing innovation with feasibility and programme realities. Support resolution of complex cybersecurity-related issues, applying structured problem-solving to maintain system stability and integrity Key Management Manage secure key-generation and distribution processes for current and legacy ECUs Requirements Traceability & Evidence Ensure cybersecurity requirements are fully traceable to verification methods, test cases, and results, generating clear evidence to support design maturity, gateway decisions, and regulatory compliance. Cybersecurity Operations & Lifecycle Support Diagnose and resolve complex cybersecurity validation issues, working with system owners, software teams, suppliers, and test functions to identify root causes, manage corrective actions, and protect programme timing. Contribute to vulnerability management and incident response process Cross-Functional Delivery Support Partner with engineering, integration, and programme teams to ensure cybersecurity V&V activities are planned realistically, prioritised appropriately, and aligned with overall vehicle development and release objectives. Compliance & Continuous Improvement Support compliance with UNECE WP.29 R155, GB 44495, ISO 21434, and related standards by maintaining robust validation artefacts, improving test methods and processes, and contributing to the continuous improvement of McLaren’s cybersecurity V&V capability. What You'll Bring Strong understanding of automotive E/E architectures, in-vehicle networks, and cybersecurity mechanisms including secure communication, authentication, key management, and secure diagnostics. Working knowledge of cybersecurity standards and regulations including ISO 21434, UNECE WP.29 R155, GB 44495, and supporting evidence expectations within product development and release processes. Familiarity with cybersecurity risk analysis and management frameworks Familiarity with cybersecurity analysis and validation techniques such as threat analysis, attack path assessment, penetration testing, fuzz testing, and robustness testing. Knowledge of cryptographic algorithms, key management systems (KMS), and public key infrastructure (PKI), including certificate signing and management Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical risks, test outcomes, and delivery implications clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Degree-qualified in engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, or a related discipline. Professional certifications in cybersecurity or test-related disciplines would be advantageous.
