Job Description: Our client is a global leader in precision technology and smart machinery manufacturing, is seeking a high-performing Senior Site Reliability Engineer / Platform Engineer to join their Platform Engineering team in Urbandale, IA. In this core platform engineering role, you will bridge the gap between software development and cloud infrastructure. Working in a collaborative paired programming environment, you will write backend software services primarily in Java (70%) and Go (10%), build custom Kubernetes operators and internal tooling, manage enterprise multi-region AWS EKS clusters, and build scalable observability systems using OpenTelemetry. Key Responsibilities: Platform Software Development (Java 70% / Go 10%): Write, test, and maintain high-performance backend microservices, custom Kubernetes operators, and observability tools using Java and Go, alongside Scala and Python.Kubernetes & Cloud Infrastructure: Deploy, configure, and manage scalable Kubernetes / AWS EKS clusters across multi-region cloud environments.Observability & Distributed Tracing: Implement and maintain end-to-end telemetry pipelines, distributed tracing, and monitoring frameworks using OpenTelemetry, Datadog, and Grafana.Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Automate multi-region AWS cloud provisioning, storage solutions, and infrastructure workflows using Terraform.Paired Programming & Agile Coaching: Actively participate in daily paired programming sessions, lead technical architecture design reviews, and mentor junior engineers across aligned product squads.Required Qualifications & Skills: Dual Experience: 4 to 7+ years of software engineering experience with a balanced background across both backend software engineering and SRE/platform infrastructure.Programming Core: 3 to 6+ years of active software development experience with core proficiency in Java (70%) and Go (10%), complemented by Python or Scala.Container Orchestration: 3+ years of hands-on experience deploying, managing, and troubleshooting Kubernetes / AWS EKS clusters.Cloud & IaC: 3+ years of experience hosting cloud services in AWS and managing infrastructure using Terraform.Observability & Tracing: 3+ years of experience with OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, and SRE reliability practices.Paired Programming & Collaboration: Strong comfort working in a paired programming environment with excellent communication and initiative.Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or an equivalent technical discipline.Stand-Out Skills (Preferred): Hands-on experience developing custom Kubernetes operators or Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs).Advanced diagnostic, dashboarding, and alerting proficiency with Datadog and Grafana.Experience supporting multi-region, high-throughput enterprise production systems.Actual Skills Required: Core Backend Software Engineering in Java & GoKubernetes Cluster Deployment & Operator Development (AWS EKS)Cloud-Native Observability & Distributed Tracing (OpenTelemetry)Infrastructure as Code Automation (Terraform & AWS)Paired Programming & Agile Technical Design
