Location: Chicago, IL / Dallas, TX Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 2 days per week onsite, with additional onsite attendance as requested Duration: 12 months Education: High school diploma required; college degree not required Position Overview Caterpillar is seeking a DevOps Engineer 3 to join the DevOps Engineering team within Cat Digital. This role will support engineering teams in designing, building, testing, deploying, and maintaining cloud-based solutions. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with AWS, GitHub Actions, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, CloudFormation, IAM, and AWS MLOps/AI services. The role requires an independent problem solver who can work closely with cross-functional engineering teams and provide technical support for complex cloud and infrastructure environments. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, test, and deploy software systems, applications, and cloud infrastructure.Independently manage complex application, technical, and infrastructure-related assignments.Troubleshoot and resolve complex application, cloud, and infrastructure issues, including occasional off-shift or weekend support.Develop and maintain scalable cloud infrastructure supporting multiple applications and engineering teams.Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub and GitHub Actions.Develop and deploy Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using AWS CloudFormation.Manage and troubleshoot AWS IAM, cloud connectivity, and related infrastructure issues.Support engineering teams with CI/CD, cloud deployment, and Infrastructure as Code activities.Work with AWS MLOps and AI services, including SageMaker Notebooks, Amazon Bedrock, ECS/EKS, and IAM.Maintain high standards for software and infrastructure quality through effective engineering practices.Participate in integrated testing and customer acceptance testing to ensure quality and timely delivery.Collaborate with end users, internal customers, and engineering teams to support application development, debugging, testing, interoperability, and completeness.Identify opportunities for technical improvement, scalability, and process optimization.Participate in regular DevOps team standups and serve as a technical point of contact for assigned Digital engineering teams.Perform additional duties as assigned by Caterpillar management. Required Qualifications 5–7+ years of DevOps or software development experience, preferably in a DevOps Engineer role.5+ years of hands-on AWS cloud experience.Strong experience with GitHub and GitHub Actions.Proficiency developing YAML-based CI/CD pipelines.Strong experience creating and deploying AWS infrastructure using CloudFormation.Hands-on experience with AWS MLOps and AI services, including:Amazon SageMakerAmazon BedrockAmazon ECS/EKSAWS IAMStrong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.Excellent interpersonal and technical communication skills.Ability to work effectively with cross-functional engineering and technology teams.High school diploma required; college degree is not required. The team helps engineering groups develop, build, test, deploy, and operate cloud-based solutions. This position is a backfill and will provide direct DevOps support to assigned Digital engineering teams. DevOps Engineers collaborate regularly through team standups and serve as key technical contacts for the engineering teams they support. Typical Day A typical day may include: Managing and troubleshooting AWS IAM configurations. Resolving Caterpillar cloud and connectivity issues. Supporting engineers with CI/CD pipelines. Developing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code. Troubleshooting AWS infrastructure and deployment issues. Collaborating with engineering teams on cloud solutions and technical challenges. Participating in DevOps standups and coordinating priorities with assigned teams. The work environment is a Cat Digital office with other DevOps Engineers, operating in a collaborative, cross-functional setting. Candidate Profile The strongest candidates will demonstrate: Extensive hands-on AWS DevOps experience. Strong GitHub Actions and CI/CD expertise. Proven CloudFormation/IaC experience. Experience with AWS AI/MLOps services. Strong cloud troubleshooting and infrastructure problem-solving capabilities. Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
