About the Opportunity
The Software Engineer, Trust develops and maintains scalable systems that detect and prevent fraudulent listings on the platform.
This role collaborates with engineering, machine learning, product, operations, and data science teams to strengthen platform security and integrity.
The position directly contributes to protecting guests and hosts, reducing fraud-related losses, and maintaining a trusted user experience.
Responsibilities
• Develop and maintain large-scale backend systems that detect fraudulent activity using rules and machine learning models.
• Collaborate with machine learning engineers, product managers, operations, and data scientists to identify business opportunities and refine fraud detection requirements.
• Build tools and automation that enable operations teams to investigate and reduce fraud effectively.
• Design user challenges and verification solutions that prevent fraudulent listings while minimizing disruption to legitimate users.
• Develop and implement solutions such as location verification, automated fraud investigations, improved operational tooling, and machine learning data pipelines.
• Scale fraud prevention systems and continuously improve detection capabilities.
Requirements
• Minimum of 3 years of industry experience building scalable software systems; advanced degrees such as an MS or PhD in a relevant field may be considered in place of some experience.
• Experience building user-facing products or large-scale backend systems.
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages, including Ruby/Ruby on Rails, Java, JavaScript, Python, or Scala.
• Ability to write high-performance, production-quality code.
• Strong understanding of architectural patterns for large-scale web applications, including APIs, data pipelines, and algorithms.
• Experience or interest in collaborating with design, product, data science, and research teams.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with non-technical stakeholders, including legal and operations teams.
• Experience in Trust and Risk domains is a plus.
Pay Range and Compensation Package
• Salary range: $162,000–$186,000 USD.
• This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
