A healthcare technology organization is looking for a senior mobile developer to lead the rebuild of mobile applications, choose modern technologies, and deliver high-quality user experiences.

Highlights

Lead the modernization of a widely used mobile application and influence technical direction from foundation to launch.

Description

It is 11 in the evening. Someone on the sofa opens our app, orders a repeat prescription in two taps and puts the phone down. No phone call, no waiting line, no note on the kitchen table. Half of the people who arrange their care with us do it exactly like that — on a phone, from the sofa. That app is now due for a rebuild, and we are looking for the senior mobile developer who will lead it. What will you do? You take the lead in building the new Uw Zorg Online app for iOS and Android, on a modern hybrid stack, from the technical foundation through to a first version in the stores. The current app runs on Cordova, a framework that has reached end of life. Roughly half of our users are on mobile. You set the direction, you set the quality bar, and you take it live. The technology choice is genuinely still open. React Native and Flutter are both on the table — we have ruled out fully native development — and we expect you to have a strong, well-argued opinion and to help make that call. You choose it, you own it. Your main goal is simple: an app that feels fast, calm and obvious to people who are often elderly, unwell or in a hurry. Your tasks: You lead the rebuild of the app for iOS and Android from a shared codebase: architecture, project structure, state management, navigation, native modules. You help make the stack decision (React Native or Flutter) and then set up the foundation the rest of the team builds on.You set up the release pipeline: CI/CD, versioning, staged rollouts, App Store and Play Store submission, crash reporting and analytics.Together with product and design you audit the current app's screens and decide what deserves a real mobile screen and what can live in a mobile web view. You work closely with the backend team on a new BFF (Backend-for-Frontend) layer, help define the API contracts, and help move business logic and validation out of the app and back into the backend, where it belongs.Performance, accessibility (WCAG) and app-store health stay on your radar with every release. You plan and execute a phased rollout: old and new app run side by side while features and users move over gradually. You work with AI as a normal part of development. We are actively moving towards AI-accelerated engineering, including converting screens with AI support. Let's be honest about the challenge We would rather find the right person than the largest number of people, so here is what you are walking into: The old app is not a clean starting point. Business logic and validation sit in the app instead of the backend, and the UI/UX reviews are not kind. Part of the job is untangling that while users stay served. The backend is mid-transition. Some services are solid and well documented, others are being replaced. The ambition is real: a first version live in the first half of 2027, then a phased migration. Our engineering teams have historically worked quite separately. Getting the platform team and the new-architecture team aligned around the app is as much a part of this role as writing code. If that reads as a list of problems, this is not the role for you. If it reads as a list of things you would enjoy fixing, we should talk. Where you'll work At Health Cloud Initiative (HCI), more than 250 colleagues work towards one goal: better care, made easy. At UZO we work on technology that really helps, for the care provider and for the user. We do that in an open, involved team with high ambitions and an honest culture. Millions of people arrange their care online: booking an appointment, requesting a prescription, viewing their file, contacting their care provider. At a great many practices, that runs through us. Uw Zorg Online is the platform where people have their medical data and their care providers in one place and can arrange their health online. With connections to almost all GPs, hospitals and a large share of pharmacies and allied health professionals, we have grown into the personal health environment of the Netherlands. But putting up a portal is only the beginning. The real question is how you help practices not just to offer digital care, but to steer on it. That is what we work on, and that is what you influence. What you make here touches the daily work of thousands of GPs and their patients. We are not the biggest in healthcare software, and we do not need to be. We want to build the best solution, and we look for people who are just as keen on that as we are. You join the new mobile team, set up specifically for this rebuild. The culture is open, direct and light. We say what we think, we help each other move forward and we celebrate the things that work. You get room to make your own technical choices and support when you get stuck. If you want to grow in a certain direction, say so, and you will get the space for it. What do we offer you? At HCI-UwZorg Online, we believe in caring for each other, also within the team. That is why we offer you: Salary: € 5.000,- to € 6.000,- gross per month based on 40 hours.8% holiday allowance, internet allowance and a good pension scheme.Hybrid working: at our pleasant office in Amsterdam-Zuidoost (close to Holendrecht station) and from home.24 holidays, with the option to swap public holidays.Travel allowance and a home office allowance.Learning & development: a personal development budget (€ 1,000) and time for training.Ownership of a rebuild that reaches millions of users, and the freedom to choose the stack it runs on.Job satisfaction: a collegial team with a heart for care and technology.Healthy fun: fresh fruit every day, lunch together and nice team outings.Working at the market leader in healthcare IT: 5,000+ care practices, 4+ million end users, impact at scale. What do you bring? You keep the overview, also when the technique or the context gets messy. You make a call, write down why, and take responsibility for what you deliver. You are comfortable being the most senior mobile person in the room without needing to be the loudest. You ask questions when something does not add up. No big egos here, just craft and the calm to keep solutions simple. Several years of experience building and shipping production apps for both iOS and Android from a shared codebase, with clear seniority.Deep, production-grade knowledge of React Native or Flutter, including the parts people skip: native modules, platform-specific behaviour, framework upgrades, build tooling. You have taken an app from zero to the stores and kept it healthy afterwards: releases, store review, staged rollouts, crash triage.A strong grip on app architecture and state management, and on the trade-offs between offline-first, caching and always-online designs. You are comfortable defining and consuming APIs. You can hold your own in a backend conversation about contracts, authentication and data flow instead of waiting for an endpoint to appear.Technical leadership without needing the title: you set direction, review other people's work, write things down and can explain a technical decision to product and to non-engineers.An eye for performance and accessibility. You test on a real phone before someone else has to.Comfortable working in a distributed team: part of our team works from outside the Netherlands. Nice to have: Experience with both React Native and Flutter, and an honest view of where each one wins. You have replaced a legacy app (Cordova, Ionic, PhoneGap or similar) while it was still live in users' hands.Mobile CI/CD depth: Fastlane, EAS, Codemagic, GitHub Actions, automated store submission.Experience in a privacy-sensitive or regulated domain: AVG/GDPR, NEN 7510/ISO 27001, MDR, or authentication such as DigiD.A native iOS (Swift) or Android (Kotlin) background underneath the hybrid experience.Working knowledge of Dutch — useful for the domain, not required to be hired. We are not counting years in one specific framework. We care about how you solve problems and how you apply what you know. You are welcome to use AI in our technical case, as long as you can explain and defend the result. All roles in HCI require a VOG (proof of conduct) as we work for the healthcare domain. Interested? Do you want to use your mobile skills for better care? Then we would love to meet you! Send your CV to vacatures@hci-software.com and we will contact you soon. The application process We review your application carefully. If there is a match, a first interview with one of our team members follows.A technical case and a conversation about it, with your future colleagues.Does it click on both sides? Then we make you an offer!VOG (proof of conduct), on our costs obviously.
