Takticians
We build software for small manufacturers currently running their business on spreadsheets and gut feel.
Early-stage NZ startup, founded 2024, live products, paying customers in NZ and the UK, small senior hybrod team, fast iteration.
Three products: Factory Door (self-serve eCommerce and quoting for manufacturers selling custom products online), Factory Floor (ERP and production management, replacing the spreadsheet chaos), and Factory Store (warehouse and inventory management).
The role
Genuinely full-stack, across both the interfaces and the systems underneath them.
Frontend: we build complex, highly configurable interfaces — drag-and-drop workflow editors, visual configuration tools, data-dense dashboards — that need to be usable by a busy operations manager with zero training.
Self-service is the whole promise: customers should never have to call us to configure their own system.
Backend: the core of Takticians is a flexible workflow engine.
Manufacturers define their own production processes, states, custom fields and metrics, and the data model underneath has to be robust, performant and easy to evolve.
Multi-tenant PostgresSQL, careful schema design, integrations.
You'll take features end to end — schema, server actions, UI — and make sound calls at every layer.
What you'll work on
Complex configuration UIs: visual editors, drag-and-drop builders, field configuration panelsProduction dashboards and job-tracking interfaces for shop floor staffData modelling for configurable domain concepts: value streams, states, custom fields, multi-tenant orgs, jobs, inventory, workflow eventsSchema design and migrations (PostgreSQL + Drizzle + Atlas CLI)Server actions and API/route handler design (Next.js App Router)Multi-tenancy patterns and access controlQuery optimisation, indexing, caching strategyIntegrations: Xero, Stripe, AWS servicesComponent architecture and design system work (HeroUI-based)Performance and accessibility — if a non-technical user is confused, it's a bugStack
Next.js 16 App Router · React 19 · TypeScript (strict, no unjustified any) · PostgreSQL + Drizzle ORM (Atlas CLI Pro for migrations) · pnpm 10 workspaces + Turbo · HeroUI · Playwright · Biome · AWS / Localstack, Docker Compose locally
You'll be a fit if you
Can take a feature end to end, from schema to finished UI, and make sound calls at every layerThink through the data model before writing code — a bad schema call in week one costs you in year twoHave built complex data-driven UIs before: configurators, dashboards, workflow toolsHave worked on multi-tenant SaaS architecture, or understand the tradeoffs in configurable/dynamic systems (EAV, JSON columns, type-safe schema approaches)Understand query performance: execution plans, indexes, N+1sHave solid instincts for how an interface should behave, and notice when one doesn'tAre comfortable with ambiguity, rapid iteration and MVP-first thinkingWork autonomously in a remote team and communicate directly, async, without much egoNice to have: manufacturing/logistics/industrial software experience, lean manufacturing or value-stream concepts, integration experience (Xero, Stripe or similar), accessibility experience, AWS (S3, SQS, Lambda).
