Position Title: Embedded Developer Position Location: Calgary, Alberta Reports to: VP Technology Position Overview The Embedded Developer will join a small, agile R&D team responsible for the design and development of Pacesetter's next generation integrated Measurement While Drilling (MWD) and Rotary Steerable System (RSS) platform. This role is firmware-focused, with the successful candidate taking responsibility for embedded software development for downhole tool electronics, working closely with senior electrical engineer responsible for hardware design and software development team and mechanical engineering disciplines to deliver a fully integrated downhole platform. Responsibilities ● Design, develop, and maintain firmware for downhole MWD tool electronics, including sensor interfacing, telemetry, power management, and real-time control ● Serve as a core contributor to the firmware architecture of Pacesetter's next generation integrated MWD/RSS platform ● Collaborate closely with hardware/electrical engineers on schematic review, prototype development and hardware-firmware integration ● Support field testing of prototype tools, including diagnosis of failures observed in the field or lab ● Participate in code reviews and contribute to firmware development standards and best practices within the team ● Collaborate with cross-functional team members on integration testing between firmware, surface software, and downhole hardware ● Debug and troubleshoot firmware issues at the board level, including use of oscilloscope and in-circuit debuggers ● Write and maintain technical documentation for firmware architecture, interfaces, and test procedures Education, Experience, Technical Qualifications ● Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., electrical/computer engineering, engineering technology, computer science, or similar) ● 3-5 years of experience in embedded firmware development, ideally within downhole, oilfield, industrial, or similarly rugged environments ● Strong proficiency in embedded C for microcontroller/microprocessor platforms ● Experience with real-time, resource-constrained embedded systems (interrupts, RTOS or bare-metal scheduling, memory-constrained designs) ● Strong understanding of communication protocols relevant to embedded systems (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART, CAN) ● Ability to read schematics and use lab equipment (oscilloscope, multimeter, logic analyzer) to support debug Good to Have ● Hardware development experience is an asset (schematic review, PCB layout awareness, bench debugging) ● Experience with Texas Instruments (TI) microprocessors/microcontrollers ● Experience with Microchip dsPIC microcontrollers ● Familiarity with Code Composer Studio (CCS) IDE ● Prior experience with downhole tools or MWD/LWD/RSS systems ● Experience with high temperature electronics design or qualification Additional Skills ● Exceptional attention to detail; comfortable working to high standards of quality in a reliability-critical domain ● Strong problem-solving skills and a methodical, process-oriented approach to debugging ● Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small, fast-paced team ● Strong communication skills; ability to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders ● High degree of initiative and ownership over assigned technical scope
