Role overview:
We are seeking a Senior Technology Product Manager to define, drive, and execute the reliability and platform strategy for an SRE team uniquely spanning three major Marketing departments.
You will own a complex portfolio of technical products operating concurrently across Booking.com's internal platform, AWS, and GCP, while managing integrations with external partners including whitelabel solutions, APIs, digital advertising, PPC campaigns, mobile app installs, and social media platforms.
This role requires exceptional technical fluency and stakeholder management across significant organizational complexity.
You will ensure massive, high-throughput marketing systems remain resilient, performant, and scalable by applying modern SRE and multi-cloud architectural principles.
Success requires balancing aggressive customer acquisition goals with strict infrastructure reliability and cost-optimization requirements.
Key Job Responsibilities and Duties:
Product Strategy & VisionOwn and set the long-term (~1+ year) reliability and architecture strategy for marketing infrastructure spanning internal, AWS, and GCP environments
Define the north star vision for platforms and tooling related to failover strategies, capacity management, chaos engineering, observability, incident management, and resilience automation
Align strategic priorities across three distinct Marketing departments, balancing customer acquisition goals with reliability and cost optimization
Formulate a cohesive strategy for third-party partnerships, mapping how whitelabel sites, ad networks, and social media APIs integrate securely and seamlessly with core platforms
Own team-level objectives and contribute to overall track strategy, acting as fluent spokesperson across organizational boundaries
Reliability & SRE ExcellenceDefine measurable Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) to track performance across all marketing channels
Manage error budgets to quantify allowable risk and align engineering velocity with business expectations
Champion chaos engineering practices by intentionally introducing failures to validate system resilience and fault tolerance
Lead blameless post-mortems following incidents to drive lasting architectural improvements and reduce mean time to resolve (MTTR)
Advocate for reliability culture and drive adoption of best practices, empowering teams to take shared responsibility
Product Delivery & Technical ExecutionManage long-term roadmaps with significant technical, organizational, and product complexity across multiple teams
Build products and capabilities that allow engineers to design, deploy, and operate reliable services with minimal friction, focusing on failover, capacity, and chaos testing validation
Partner with Engineering Managers and Directors to make complex build, buy, or partner decisions
Understand technical intricacies of deploying scalable, fault-tolerant architectures across AWS and GCP
Embed technical debt repayment into roadmaps, framing infrastructure upgrades as strategic investments to leadership
Manage multi-tenant architectures and data pipelines, ensuring secure, performant data synchronization between Booking.com and advertising partners
Partnership & Integration ManagementEvaluate third-party vendors and API partners across scalability benchmarks, security posture, and integration effort
Manage the technical lifecycle of external integrations (PPC, mobile app installs, whitelabels), understanding data flows, REST/HTTP methods, and JSON payloads
Oversee data lineage and API versioning/deprecation strategies to prevent silent breakages or cascading failures
Ensure external marketing integrations remain resilient through rigorous testing and monitoring
Data Fluency & Impact MeasurementDefine KPIs for failover, capacity, and chaos testing tooling adoption and effectiveness (successful failover rates, capacity utilization, chaos experiment coverage, incidents prevented, service uptime)
Identify and explain choice of primary metrics, supporting metrics, and counter-metrics for system health
Optimize cloud spend without degrading performance by tracking cost allocation and defining performance budgets
Leverage distributed tracing, telemetry, and high-cardinality observability tools for fast root cause analysis
Understand solid hypothesis formation, sample size, p-value, test power, and sophisticated experimentation techniques
Deal with ambiguous and complex data where proxy metrics might be needed
Stakeholder Management & LeadershipRepresent SRE team's work up to Senior Director/Leadership Team level
Translate complex technical concepts (microservice latency, API rate limiting, cross-cloud failover) into clear business impacts (conversion drops, marketing ROI) for non-technical stakeholders
Gather and integrate stakeholder requirements independently, handling challenging stakeholders and conflicting priorities
Manage stakeholder expectations with timely, concise, clear progress updates across different mediums
Identify risks, dependencies, and technical constraints early, planning for mitigations
Community Impact & MentorshipActively contribute to Product Management craft community inside and outside the track
Participate in Product craft Working Groups (Recruitment, Learning & Development, Promotions)
Serve as interviewer for (S)PM roles across the organization
Mentor junior PMs and advocate for strong reliability culture
Role Qualifications and Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; MBA or equivalent experience is a plus
Machine learning experience
Experience with multiple customer research techniques (interviews, surveys, analytics, story mapping)
Success MetricsAdoption rate of failover, capacity, and chaos testing tools/platforms across engineering teams
Reduction in mean time to detect (MTTD) and mean time to resolve (MTTR) related to failover and capacity issues
Improvement in service-level objectives (SLO) compliance due to enhanced testing
Developer satisfaction with resilience testing tools
Increase in automated vs.
manual reliability validation practices
Cloud cost optimization while maintaining or improving performance benchmarks
