Summary ✨ AI‑Generated

A lead modelling software engineer is sought to own modelling and optimization engines at the intersection of mathematical modelling, physics, software engineering, and connected-device data. You will take ideas from research and simulation into production, improve thermal and behavioral models, and monitor their real-world performance.

Highlights

Own the full lifecycle of sophisticated modelling and optimization software, from research and simulation through production and real-world monitoring. The role combines mathematical modelling, physics, software engineering, and real-world connected-device data to support low-carbon technology.

Description

Lead Modelling Software Engineer Manchester | Office once every 2 months | Salary to be discussed on qualification + benefits ✨ I'm working with an exciting Tech for Good / Energy Tech business focused on accelerating the transition to low-carbon heating. Their technology is already being used across connected devices, and they're now looking for a Lead Modelling Software Engineer to take ownership of the modelling and optimisation engines behind the platform. This isn't a typical software engineering role. You'll be working where mathematical modelling, physics, software engineering and real-world IoT data come together — building technology with a genuine purpose. What you'll be working on: You'll own the full lifecycle of the modelling software — taking ideas from research and simulation through to production and monitoring how they perform in the real world. You'll be: Building and improving mathematical models around thermal dynamics and heating behaviourDeveloping optimisation algorithms using real-world sensor and telemetry dataTranslating mathematical models and control theory into robust Python softwareWorking with weather, energy, tariff and smart meter data to test and validate modelsBuilding simulation and testing environmentsImproving the reliability and performance of models running across thousands of connected devicesTaking technical ownership of projects and working closely with the wider engineering teamSupporting the evolution of the modelling platform, including work moving from Python towards C++ We're looking for someone with strong Python and mathematical modelling experience who enjoys taking complex models and turning them into production-ready software. You'll ideally have experience with: Strong PythonNumPy, Pandas and SciPyMathematical modelling, optimisation or numerical methodsDynamical systems / control theoryModel Predictive Control (MPC) would be highly beneficialSoftware engineering best practice, testing and CI/CDWorking with real-world or physical systems/dataTechnical leadership or ownership of projects AWS experience would be useful, but isn't essential. C/C++ experience would also be a bonus, but they're happy to support someone in developing this skill. A Master's or PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or another highly quantitative discipline would be advantageous, but strong relevant commercial experience is equally important. This is an opportunity to have genuine ownership over a core piece of technology, working directly with the Head of Engineering, leading technically and managing one engineer while remaining highly hands-on. If you're interested in Tech for Good, Energy Tech, mathematical modelling, optimisation or building technology with a genuine purpose, I'd love to hear from you.
