Job Location: Edmonds Employment type: Permanent Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Annual Salary: $ 131,100.00 - 165,800.00 No. of positions: 5 Closing date: September 15, 2026 About the job: What you’ll do • The Protection, Control and Telecommunications Engineering Division is responsible for engineering BC Hydro’s Protection & Control systems and Telecommunication Networks, and ensuring these systems contribute to safe and reliable operation of BC Hydro’s electric system while meeting performance requirements of system planners, regulators, customers and other stakeholders. The division provides engineering studies, standards, specifications, design solutions, construction documentation, and engineering oversight of work done by engineering service partners. We provide technical support during procurement, construction, testing and commissioning, and provide asset lifecycle support with critical failure analysis and emergency operational support for restoring customer supply in the event of forced outages. The division is responsible for deploying and sustaining numerous regulatory bulk electric system standards, including cybersecurity standards for Industrial Control and Telecommunication systems. We have several exciting opportunities in the P&C Planning department within the P&C/Telecom Engineering Division. We are seeking Engineers to provide technical leadership and expertise on various Transmission and Generation relaying applications. P&C Planning is responsible for defining protection architecture, functional criteria and specifications for relaying and control systems, and protection relay settings for transmission, distribution substations, and generation protection systems. Working closely with other P&C Planners, the protection specialist provides technical leadership and guidance and successfully carries out the following duties: • Plans, evaluates and integrates protective relaying schemes and remedial action schemes, and associated teleprotection and data communications. • Performs digital fault studies and other relay or system studies to determine protection and control application requirements and optimal settings for protective relays and control devices. • Evaluates interconnection requests from customers and independent power producers for connection to the transmission system. • Provides technical leadership and acts as an expert resource responsible for providing professional/technical advice in programs, projects, and initiatives within and outside the department. • Analyzes and resolves challenging and unusual engineering problems with considerable independence. • Provides technical direction to engineers, consultants, and technical support staff. Effectively manages resources and develops innovative design solutions for engineering problems. • Leads a technical area of responsibility on behalf of the department (e.g. compliance standards, estimating practices etc.) • Mentors, supports, and provides advice to team members, encourages their work initiative, and helps them grow as engineers and technical leaders. What you bring • A degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities (preferably power engineering). Master's degree or higher preferred. • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC). • A minimum of 10 years (Specialist Engineer), 8 years (Senior Engineer) or 4 years (Intermediate Engineer) of experience • in engineering, design, and implementation of electric utility protection and control systems. • The successful candidate shall demonstrate: o Technical knowledge in design, application and implementation of transmission and generation protection & control system systems for utility substations from 12kV to 500kV with overhead and cable transmission line, transformer, shunt and series capacitor, reactor, circuit breakers experience. o Demonstrated experience meeting requirements and measures within relevant NERC PRC standards. o Ability to communicate effectively and clearly including verbal and technical writing. o Ability to investigate, analyze and solve a variety of engineering problems such as unexpected misoperation of protective devices. o Effectiveness in work leadership with ability to coordinate and lead multiple projects, and plan and manage project resources. o Experience with project management principles managing the engineering component (scope, schedule, cost, technical risk) of large and/or technically complex projects. o Ability to manage client relationships and expectations to ensure their needs are met and to work closely with stakeholders to drive innovation, find engineering solutions that add value to reach consensus. #CPGN1 What we offer • A comprehensive benefits package - A minimum of 15 paid vacation days - A lifetime pension - Flexible work model, depending on your role type - Training and development courses For more information on the benefits we offer, visit bchydro.com/benefits.
