Meet: Rakuten Headcount globally: 11,000+Headcount in Australia: 40Role type: PermanentLocation: CremorneWays of working: Hybrid, 3 days in officeTech stack: JavaScript, TypeScript, AWS, Agentic AI About Rakuten Rakuten Rewards gives millions of members real cash back every time they shop online, and solving that at scale is a genuinely hard technical problem. Most cashback platforms make members wait up to 60 days for affiliate networks to confirm a purchase, and even then the data isn't always accurate or on time. Rakuten Rewards is building the infrastructure to change that: instant cashback confirmation for members, while the verification happens behind the scenes. The team is also setting the standard on affiliate cookie protection, including a "stand down" protocol that stops competing cashback tools from muscling in when Rakuten got there first. It's a live, competitive space, and this team is leading it. The role You'll be building and improving the browser based product experience that Rakuten Rewards members use every day, across Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. Right now, the focus is bringing features that have already proven themselves on mobile across to desktop, a part of the product where the majority of Rakuten Rewards' orders already happen. You'll be working in JavaScript and TypeScript, close to the user experience, solving real problems across the web layer and the systems behind it. This isn't a narrow, single product role either. Once you're across the browser extension work, you'll grow into the squad's broader suite of products, picking up new context and ownership as you go. About you You're a mid-level engineer with a solid JavaScript and TypeScript foundation who likes working close to the user. Browser extension experience isn't essential; if you've worked in web or full stack environments and you're comfortable with APIs, you'll pick this up fast. What matters more is curiosity: you like exploring ideas, testing approaches, and figuring things out without waiting to be told exactly what to do. You use AI to move faster, but you still care about understanding what you ship. And you're comfortable collaborating with teams across the US and Canada, working well across different time zones. Why you should look at this one This is a chance to work on a product area with real scale, visibility and impact, not a narrow maintenance role or a quiet corner of a platform nobody notices. You'll be building and improving desktop and browser based experiences that sit close to the customer journey and support a genuinely meaningful volume of user activity. If you want to see your work matter, this is a commercially important part of the product. It also gives you both focus and breadth. You'll start in the browser and web layer, but you won't be confined to one product or one technical niche for long. The team works across a broader suite of products, so there's a real path to expanding your scope, building context across multiple areas, and growing your ownership over time. The nature of the work itself is a big part of the appeal too. The team is taking ideas that have already proven themselves on mobile and bringing them into the desktop experience, which creates plenty of room for experimentation, product improvement and genuinely thoughtful engineering. It's a great fit if you enjoy JavaScript and TypeScript, like working close to the user experience, and get a kick out of solving practical problems across browsers, web environments and APIs. The team culture is the other big draw. This squad deliberately avoids single points of failure, which means engineers are encouraged and supported to learn across the stack, contribute beyond one narrow area, and build a broad understanding of the product. If you want to keep learning and grow your scope rather than stay in one lane, this is a strong platform to do it. Next steps Hi we’re affix, proud talent acquisition partners of Rakuten. If this resonates with you, then apply! We can’t wait to meet you.
