About the opportunity
As a Staff Software Engineer for the Digital Onboarding platform, you will drive the technical strategy, architecture, and delivery of a seamless and secure onboarding experience for consumer, business, and Agri customers.
You will provide hands-on technical leadership across the full stack, bridge the gap between complex business requirements and technical execution, and act as a force multiplier for the engineering team.
You will be instrumental in shaping and delivering the technical direction for your area.
You will tackle complex, ambiguous problems, designing for long-term simplicity, reliability, and security.

This is a key leadership role to drive our technical strategy and ensure critical IP is retained within Bendigo Bank.
This responsibility carries through to working with our partner where you will lead critical initiatives from end-to-end and multiply the impact of engineers and teams around you.
Your work will directly influence our technical standards, quality, mentorship practices, and establish clear technical leadership within the Product & Customer Platforms Domain.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, Digital Onboarding, you will join a team focused on building next-generation digital public-facing products for the Retail and Commercial division.
We have a large roadmap ahead, adding new capabilities to our highly successful customer centric, modern onboarding experience, including agentic AI powered solutions.
Our engineers take ownership from requirements and concept to production, solving business and process problems too.

In this role you’ll get to
Support and complement Principal Engineers with architectural design and technical strategy for our core systems, simplifying complexity and ensuring alignment with enterprise-wide goals.
Champion and embed engineering best practices in testing, security, and CI/CD to enhance quality and reduce technical debt across our services.
Mentor and coach engineers, building technical capability within the team through knowledge sharing, design reviews, and fostering a culture of high-quality engineering.
Collaborate with product and engineering leaders on cross-domain initiatives, translate complex business features into technical requirements, and represent the engineering perspective in strategic discussions.
What you’ll bring to the role
To be successful in the role you will be a hands-on engineer who brings a blend of deep engineering expertise, strategic influence and;
10+ years of software engineering experience, with a proven record of shipping high-traffic, public-facing digital products.
BFF & Full-Stack Mastery: Advanced expertise in building highly interactive React & TypeScript frontends, backed by Node.js Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) layers and Node/Java microservices.
Secure Identity & Integrations: Extensive experience managing secure, high-risk third-party integrations (e.g., enterprise identity/access management like ISVA, and customer identity verification platforms).
Modern API & Cloud Tooling: Expert-level knowledge of REST and GraphQL API designs and deploying cloud-native services in the AWS ecosystem.
Observability & Resilient Operations: A passion for production health, with experience constructing Splunk dashboarding and configuring log analysis (correlation IDs, status codes) to proactively resolve platform issues.
AI-Driven Development: A forward-thinking approach to software delivery, with active experience or deep curiosity in leveraging generative AI toolchains (such as Google Gemini) to optimise development workflows.
Pragmatic Problem Solving: A natural ability to navigate ambiguity, make well-reasoned decisions, and balance technical excellence with business delivery.
Forward-Thinking Mindset: A strong passion for driving agentic software development lifecycles (SDLC) and a deep curiosity about how AI can revolutionize engineering, delivery, and customer experiences.
