Description

Back to all jobs About Us Today, 7 out of 10 people globally lack access to life-saving Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Conventional MRI machines are massive, cost millions of euros, and require specialized, shielded rooms which means they are usually confined to large hospitals. At DeepSpin, we are changing that by building the World’s First Flatbed MRI. Our open-architecture scanner plugs into a standard wall socket, fits into regular doctor's offices, and costs 10x less than conventional systems. Backed by globally leading VCs, we are expanding our team in Berlin. This is an opportunity to join a mission-driven team bringing an essential medical technology to the billions of people who currently cannot afford it. About Position You will join as a 6-month Freelancer (Contractor), with a direct pathway to transition into a permanent full-time position as we scale. As a Medical Software Engineer at DeepSpin, you will play a pivotal role in the implementation of the front-end and back-end of the MRI machine used by clinical and R&D users to leverage all the capabilities of the system. You will take ownership of high-level interface descriptions β€” aligning them with internal and external stakeholders, refining them, and driving them through to implementation. You will contribute to enhancing the performance and reliability of the system and will be responsible for testing and documentation needed for FDA 510(k) certification. Responsibilities: Develop and test software components for the DeepSpin MRI systemTake ownership of high-level interface descriptions: elaborate, specify, and implement interfaces for internal and external stakeholdersCritically review and challenge existing interface and system designs, identify weaknesses, and propose well-reasoned alternativesAsk the right questions early β€” surface ambiguities, unstated assumptions, and edge cases before they become costly problemsDrive the translation from prototype to a deployed and cleared/certified productChampion software development best practices Requirements 5+ years of proven experience designing and implementing enterprise-level software, preferably in a medical or regulated environmentDemonstrated ability to work independently from high-level interface and design descriptions, refining them through targeted questionsTrack record of constructively critiquing software designs and proposing improved alternativesExperience in independently planning, organising and executing complex work packagesStrong proficiency in Python, writing production-quality, maintainable code across backend services (Python); Additional experience writing frontend applications (TypeScript, e.g. React) is a plusDeep familiarity with modern development practices: test-driven development, consistent coding styles enforced via linters, formatters and code review, pragmatic software architecture, and design patterns applied with judgement β€” you know when a pattern adds value and when a simple solution winsProficiency with common testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitLab CI, GitHub Actions), and version control workflows (Git, merge requests, branching strategies, code review culture)Confidence working in Linux-based cloud, data, or distributed system environments β€” e.g. deploying and operating services on AWS/Azure/GCP or on-premise Linux clusters, containerized with Docker/KubernetesHands-on experience with common databases and messaging infrastructure β€” e.g. PostgreSQL or MySQL, Redis, and message brokers such as RabbitMQ, MQTT, or NATSAble to make and justify informed architectural trade-offs (e.g. relational vs. NoSQL, queue vs. pub/sub, sync vs. async communication)Good communication skills in English and a collaborative approach to workPreferred: Knowledge of IEC 62304 or other relevant medical device standardsPreferred: Experience working in small start-up environments and heterogeneous teamsStrong plus: Experience transitioning software from proof-of-concept to certified productPlus: Experience with medical images like DICOM What we offer Compensation: Competitive freelance rate during the contract phase + attractive full-time package upon extension (base salary + equity/stock options + full benefits).Culture: A creative, collaborative workplace with flat hierarchies and open communication.International Team: An English-first office with over 10 different nationalities driven by the same purpose.Perks: Work from our penthouse office, enjoy company-sponsored lunches, regular team events, and access to Urban Sports Club, BVG (public transport), and lifestyle vouchers.Development: High responsibility from day one, internal mentorship, and support for external training or certifications.Balance: 30 days of paid annual leave and flexible working hours.
