Description

Wavelo is a SaaS business on a mission to make telecoms a breeze. We provide flexible software that modernizes how communication service providers (CSPs) do business, helping them drive more value, focus on customer experience, and scale their operations faster. As part of Tucows (NASDAQ:TCX, TSX:TC)—one of the world’s largest Internet services companies—Wavelo is backed by outstanding resources and talent. We embrace a people-first philosophy that is rooted in respect, trust, and flexibility. We believe that whatever works for our employees is what works best for us. It’s also why the majority of our roles are remote-first, meaning you can work from anywhere you can connect to the Internet! The work we do genuinely changes lives. If this sounds exciting, we’d love to hear from you! About The Role We're looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our Platform Foundations team — a small, high-leverage group responsible for defining the engineering standards and foundational components that the entire platform is built on. This role is primarily technical — you'll stay close to the code and architecture while providing the leadership and direction a senior team needs to do its best work. You'll work across backend services, DevOps practices, and event-driven infrastructure to establish patterns the rest of engineering depends on. You'll own the developer experience and component standards that every team builds on top of, and work closely with our Operations and SRE teams to align on reliability practices and observability standards. This role is fully remote for applicants based in Canada. What You'll Do Partner with engineering leadership to evolve and standardize the foundational architecture for a cloud-native, event-driven telecom platform — identifying areas for improvement and driving safe, incremental modernization alongside active developmentOwn developer experience: build tooling, CI pipeline performance, dependency management, and inner-source contribution models across a shared monorepoGovern shared UI component standards and design system practices used across teamsEstablish and maintain engineering standards: RFCs, ADRs, architecture reviewsPartner closely with Operations and SRE to define observability standards (tracing, logging, metrics), SLO/SLI frameworks, and reliability practicesChampion AI-first development practices across tooling, workflows, and cultureManage and develop a small, established team of senior engineers What You Bring 5+ years of backend engineering experience, with hands-on proficiency in Golang or similar languagesDeep experience with event-driven and async architectures — Kafka, NATS, or comparable systemsBackground in platform or infrastructure engineering: you've built shared internal platforms, not just product featuresExperience defining engineering standards at an org level — RFCs, ADRs, or architecture review processesStrong DevOps sensibility: CI/CD, containerization, Kubernetes, cloud-native infrastructureExperience managing or mentoring engineers, with a bias toward growing people through the workComfortable working with ambiguity and incomplete requirements Nice to Have Familiarity with supporting & delivering frontend development and component/design systems — enough to govern a shared UI libraryExperience in telecom, BSS/OSS, or similarly complex domain platforms What We Value AI-first mindset: you actively use AI tooling and advocate for it in your team's workflowArchitectural depth: you can zoom out to the system and zoom in to the implementationLow ego, high ownership: you'll write code and stay close to the work alongside your teamBuild in the open: we use information as a bridge, not a moat — you share context broadly, write things down, and bring people along rather than gatekeeping The base salary range for this position is $165,000 – $175,000 CAD for Canadian residents. Other countries will differ. Range may vary on a number of factors including, but not limited to: location, experience and qualifications.
