Backend Payments Engineer

We are working with a growing Stockholm-based payments technology company developing secure and scalable financial products used across multiple markets. The company builds technology that enables businesses and financial institutions to process and manage digital payments. Its platform operates within a transaction-critical environment where reliability, performance and security are essential. About the Role We are looking for a Backend Payments Engineer to join an experienced product and engineering team. You will develop the services responsible for processing, routing and monitoring financial transactions. This includes building APIs, integrating with external financial infrastructure and ensuring the platform remains reliable as transaction volumes and customer numbers continue to grow. You will work on business-critical technology rather than conventional web applications, solving complex challenges involving distributed systems, financial integrations and high availability. Key Responsibilities Design, develop and maintain backend payment servicesBuild APIs and integrations with banks, payment providers and external partnersImprove the performance, reliability and scalability of transaction-processing systemsDevelop services within a distributed, microservice-based architectureMonitor and troubleshoot payment flows and production issuesContribute to settlement, reconciliation and transaction-management functionalityWrite automated tests and improve CI/CD processesCollaborate with engineering, product and operational teamsContribute to architectural and technical decisions Required Qualifications Commercial backend development experience using Java or KotlinExperience building APIs, microservices or distributed systemsStrong understanding of relational databasesExperience with automated testing and modern development practicesFamiliarity with cloud or containerised environmentsStrong problem-solving and collaboration skillsProfessional English communication skills Preferred Experience Previous experience within payments, FinTech or bankingPayment gateways, acquiring, issuing or transaction processingOpen banking or account-to-account paymentsSettlement and reconciliation systemsKafka or another event-driven messaging technologyAWS, Azure or GCPObservability and production-monitoring toolsKnowledge of PCI DSS, ISO 8583, EMV or other payment standards What We Offer The opportunity to work on technology responsible for real financial transactionsComplex engineering challenges involving reliability, security and scaleA collaborative environment with experienced software engineersExposure to the wider payments and financial technology ecosystemA high level of autonomy and influence over technical decisionsOpportunities to develop specialist payments knowledgeCompetitive salary and benefits Working Model This is a hybrid position based in Stockholm.
