Position Overview
We are looking for a Senior Infrastructure Automation Engineer to support a large-scale enterprise infrastructure, application automation and vulnerability management initiative.
This is a hybrid role sitting at the intersection of infrastructure engineering, middleware, application support and automation/DevOps.
The successful candidate will work directly with application owners and business teams to understand application environments, infrastructure dependencies and patching requirements, and then translate those requirements into scalable, automated workflows.
The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in Windows, Linux and/or middleware infrastructure, combined with hands-on experience using Ansible Tower / Ansible Automation Platform, PowerShell and other scripting technologies.
This is not a traditional CI/CD-focused DevOps role.
We are looking for someone who understands enterprise infrastructure and can bridge the gap between infrastructure and application teams.
Key Responsibilities
Partner directly with application owners, business teams and infrastructure teams to understand application environments and technical requirements.Assess application and infrastructure dependencies to determine what needs to occur before, during and after server patching.Identify opportunities to automate manual infrastructure, middleware and application processes.Design, develop and maintain automation workflows using Ansible Tower / Ansible Automation Platform.Develop and maintain automation scripts using PowerShell, Shell/Bash and other relevant scripting languages.Automate application and middleware startup/shutdown sequences required for infrastructure patching and maintenance.Support large-scale server patching and vulnerability management initiatives across enterprise environments.Work across Windows, Linux and middleware/application server environments.Support automation involving JBoss / Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP) and other middleware technologies.Understand how applications interact with underlying servers, middleware, services and other infrastructure components.Identify application dependencies and determine the appropriate sequencing required for safe patching and infrastructure maintenance.Develop reusable and scalable automation solutions that can be applied across multiple applications and infrastructure environments.Help standardize automation processes across a large portfolio of enterprise applications.Support applications and infrastructure operating across multiple environments and geographic regions, including U.S.-consumed applications.Work within DMZ and security-sensitive infrastructure environments.Troubleshoot automation, infrastructure and application integration issues.Collaborate with technical teams to improve automation, reliability and operational efficiency.Document automation workflows, application dependencies and operational procedures.
Required Skills & Experience
Strong experience within enterprise infrastructure engineering environments.Previous experience as a Windows Engineer, Linux Engineer, Middleware Engineer, Systems Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, DevOps Engineer or similar technical role.Hands-on experience with Ansible Tower / Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform.Strong scripting and automation skills, particularly PowerShell.Experience with Shell/Bash or other scripting languages is an asset.Strong understanding of Windows and/or Linux server environments.Experience with JBoss / Red Hat JBoss EAP or comparable enterprise middleware/application server technologies.Understanding of middleware, application servers, services and application dependencies.Experience designing, developing and implementing infrastructure automation and orchestration solutions.Experience supporting server patching, vulnerability management and infrastructure maintenance initiatives.Understanding of application startup/shutdown procedures and dependency sequencing.Experience working with DMZ environments and security-sensitive infrastructure.Ability to understand how enterprise applications interact with underlying infrastructure.Experience gathering technical requirements from application owners and translating them into automation solutions.Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.Ability to work across infrastructure, middleware, application and business teams.Experience working within large, complex enterprise environments.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Experience
Experience with JBoss, WebSphere, WebLogic, Tomcat or similar middleware/application server platforms.Experience designing or managing server images / standardized infrastructure builds.DevOps, Platform Engineering or Site Reliability Engineering experience.Experience automating application startup, shutdown, maintenance and recovery processes.Experience supporting large-scale server estates and enterprise patching programs.Experience developing reusable Ansible playbooks, roles and workflows.Experience with vulnerability remediation programs.Understanding of network segmentation, firewalls and DMZ architecture.Experience working in highly regulated or large financial services environments.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a well-rounded infrastructure engineer who has developed strong automation capabilities.
You may have started your career as a Windows, Linux, middleware or infrastructure engineer and later moved into automation, DevOps or platform engineering.
You should be comfortable going directly to an application or business team and asking questions.
The engineer will then take those requirements and build the scripts, Ansible workflows and orchestration required to automate the process safely and at scale.
The strongest candidate will understand both the infrastructure world and the application world and be able to act as the technical bridge between the two.
Project Environment
This role will support a significant enterprise automation initiative involving approximately 160 applications, with a goal of increasing automation across the application portfolio.
The broader environment includes a very large server estate, with patching activities potentially involving thousands of servers, including infrastructure supporting applications consumed within the United States.
The objective is to reduce manual effort associated with patching and vulnerability management by understanding each application's requirements, dependencies and operational procedures and converting those processes into repeatable, scalable automation.
