Description

Backend Engineer (Python) | ClimateTech | £65-85K + Equity Mostly remote | Mondays in London | 1 month/year working abroad Techmunity is hiring a Backend Engineer for a ClimateTech startup using AI to help the food industry measure and reduce its carbon emissions. Their platform is used by 100+ organisations, including 25+ UK universities, GAIL's, Wahaca and UEFA. They're approaching £1m ARR and heading towards profitability. It's eight people, with five across product and engineering. Both founders are Cambridge graduates and Forbes 30 Under 30. You'll work closely with an Oxford-trained Head of Software with 10 years' engineering experience, including as the first technical hire and CTO of a seed-stage startup. What you'll build You'll take primary ownership of the Python backend and the systems behind one of the company's core products. Customers send millions of purchasing records and thousands of recipes into the platform. Their AI pipelines categorise, clean and standardise that data before calculating the associated emissions, with 2m+ purchases already processed. The engineering problems include: Python, Django, FastAPI and PostgreSQLHigh-volume async processing and distributed workersAWS infrastructure and autoscalingReliability, concurrency, monitoring and error handlingAI-powered ingestion, validation and calculation pipelinesBuilding new systems that turn large datasets into useful AI-generated insightsThere's scope to take features end to end across the stack too. What they're looking for They're less interested in years on a CV than what you've actually owned and shipped. You'll need strong Python backend fundamentals and experience building reliable production systems. Django/FastAPI, AWS and sizeable datasets are particularly relevant. You also need to be genuinely AI-forward. The existing team uses Claude to rethink the development process itself, including agentic workflows that can take tickets through planning and into ready-to-review PRs. If Claude Code and agents are already a fundamental part of how you engineer, you'll fit in well. Production AI/LLM experience is a bonus rather than a requirement. Package £65,000–£85,000 + equity. Mostly remote, with Mondays together between Farringdon and Old Street. One month/year working abroad, plus gym, food and drink, co-working spaces and a health cash plan. Three-stage interview process. No take-home test or live coding. Apply or email reuben@techmunity.io
