Description

Backend Engineer | Autonomous Vehicles - Berlin | Office-first | €75,000–€90,000 + Equity We’re working with a fast-growing European technology company building the software and infrastructure behind real-world driverless vehicle operations. This isn't an autonomy research project or another backend role where your work sits behind a SaaS dashboard. Their vehicles are already operating on public roads, and the business is now significantly scaling its fleet and engineering capability. They’re looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to join a small, high-ownership engineering team in Berlin. The scope goes well beyond traditional backend development. You'll work across backend services, internal tooling, web applications and software infrastructure that interacts with the vehicles themselves. That could include: Building backend services supporting live driverless vehicle operationsDeveloping software running on and around the vehiclesProcessing and streaming vehicle and sensor dataCollecting data from onboard systemsBuilding services that move information between different vehicle and operational systemsDeveloping internal tools for engineering teams to analyse vehicle dataBuilding product-facing web applications and featuresHelping shape architecture as the vehicle fleet scales You'll join a small existing backend team, giving you genuine influence over technical decisions and how the platform develops. The core stack includes: TypeScript / JavaScript | Node.js | MongoDB | React We're particularly interested in engineers who also have experience across some of the following: Distributed systemsLinux environmentsNetworkingCI/CD You don't need previous autonomous vehicle experience. What's much more important is that you're a strong software engineer who enjoys ownership, understands the systems you're building and wants to work close to a complex physical product. What we're looking for: 5+ years of professional software engineering experienceStrong JavaScript / TypeScript experienceCommercial Node.js experienceStrong backend, systems or DevOps foundationsExperience taking technical problems from concept through to productionExperience building and shipping real productsSome web application development experience, ideally ReactStrong engineering fundamentals and technical judgementA pragmatic, entrepreneurial approach to getting things done Experience within a startup, scale-up or similarly fast-moving engineering environment would be particularly valuable. This is an opportunity to work on software connected to real vehicles operating in the real world. You'll have the chance to: See your work deployed into live driverless vehicle operationsJoin during a significant period of fleet and company growthInfluence architecture rather than simply inherit itWork within a small engineering team with significant individual ownershipWork across backend, infrastructure, data and vehicle-side systemsWork closely with the company's founders and technical leadershipHelp solve the engineering challenges that emerge when autonomous technology moves from development into real-world operation There are no huge corporate layers and very little distance between an engineering decision and seeing its impact. Because the company builds physical technology and integrates software closely with vehicles, engineers work alongside the wider hardware, software and operational teams. There is some flexibility when required, but candidates should expect Berlin to be their normal place of work. Candidates currently outside Berlin who are willing to relocate can also be considered.
